about me

Sorry to all those I haven't responded to, been offline for some time. Thanks Chris and Susan for nagging me back online - and for your delightful company!

I note that while I've been offline the Chocolat lady has gone an pinched my 1st book's title (Shadowless was originally The Girl With No Shadow). I'd sulk but she's a great writer and I like her taste in titles, so there you go, don't read it again unless you enjoyed it the first time!

favourite books

For cracking characters and an epic plot - The Chronicles of Morgaine by C J Cherryh.
For easy reading and endless laughs - anything by Terry Pratchett that involves the Lancre witches or the Ankh-Morpork watch.
For having the best twists of plot - Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
...and the book that first made me want to write? The Dancing Bear by Peter Dickinson.

Unpublished and on here, I'd recommend CP Hoff's Tnuth, Sheena Ignatia's Jeannealogy and Sonia Pedemont's Keeper of the Tribe.

Helen Bell

Think how amazing it would be to know what the future holds.

Now think again.

Renia knew how it would turn out the day she and her brother Vel pulled the stranger out of the surf, more dead than alive. Vel’s already eager for adventure; she knows trouble is coming without him looking for it. Combine that with a driven man who will not abandon his duty whatever the cost, facing a powerful enemy willing to plunge a nation into chaos in his ambition and desire for revenge – things were never going to go well.

Only Renia really can see the future - though she wishes she couldn’t. It’s brought her nothing but misery and accusations of witchcraft in the past. Now it promises a dangerous journey filled with longing for what she can’t have and the loss of everything that matters to her.

Since there’s nothing she can do to avoid it she sets out, not knowing if she’s destined to somehow find a way to save those she loves, or if she must look on, powerless, as their fate unfolds...

Restoring The Light

Helen Bell

When what you dread most is what you want most,
how can there ever be a right choice?

Renia is struggling to live with seeing the future, fearing for her brother at every step and knowing there is no hope her love for Kerin HedSarol will ever come to anything; and she has at last met his brother Jastur, rightful Crown of Ilmaen, the man her far-seeing has driven them to rescue against perilous odds.

Jastur may be have his freedom but he is a sick man, and Kerin’s hated adversary Lemno Tekai is hunting them all. At some stage Kerin must face the Tekai once more if he is to restore Jastur to his rightful place, but right now the only option is to run.

It doesn’t help Renia to know that the Tekai wields the same power she does. Now she must tell Kerin or he could end up making the wrong decision. The heartbreaking truth is that the wrong decision could be to trust her too far.

The journey has revealed unexpected new friends and hidden secret enemies. It continues to bring wonderful opportunities and demand heartrending sacrifices.

And still that vision weighs on her like a burden while it draws her irresistibly on...

You've been busy, 3 books on here! But great writing. Since 'George' has already made it the the ed's desk, I've backed Heartless instead - different style but equally good writing. Regards Helen (Shadowless - originally The Girl With No Shadow) view book

I enjoyed this by seeing it not as a novel, but as a film script. The dialogue is bang on, the sense of confusion the heirophant feels is like Neo falling out of the Matrix into the real world and the descriptions of the unexpected creatures and environments he encounters are wonderfully vivid. This story is obviously born out a deep knowledge and love of horses and ranching, and your POV as a concept is an excellent approach. However sometimes the detail you give works against the story. For instance, all through chapter 1 I can't buy into the story, as I can't believe a new-born foal wo... view book

Great concept and kept me intrigued. The reveal all in one chapter feels a bit rushed and out of pace with earlier bits - some of which are, conversely, a little too long-winded. Get that balance of pace right and you've cracked it. Regards Helen (The Girl With No Shadow/Restoring The Light) view book

A wonderful, haunting horror story, written in a way that captures the feel of the era. My only criticism is that the key scene, where Helena is so unwillingly possesed, really needs to be stronger. Otherwise faultless, and backed! Regards Helen (The Girl With No Shadow/Restoring the Light) view book
