about me

One look at my favorite (are American spellings allowed here?) books reveals my love of historical fiction. I also do Living History Demonstrations and Civil War Re-enactments (12th Texas Artillery/Chicago Mercantile).

My wife and I live in rural east Texas, where we raise horses. A student of history, I also have taught it. I'm no starry-eyed romantic that thinks things were great in the "good ole days," but there are certain elements of life in mid 19th century America that I wish we had retained (not slavery of course): Nobility of purpose and Faith in God, specifically. Thus, when they faced the grim reaper back then, the resolve they demonstrated is difficult for us to comprehend today.

My cover art is a photo of a monument in Mount Hope Cemetery, in Rochester, NY. It was erected in 1908. The plaque reads: "1861-1865. On fame's eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread, and glory guards with solemn round the bivouac of the dead." It is a portion of a poem written by Confederate veteran Theodore O'Hara. I felt it was appropriate given the themes in CEMETERY RIDGE, since it is a poem written by Confederate soldier and Irish-American from Kentucky, a State that did not secede. The poem was beloved of many Americans of that era, regardless of geography.

Cemetery Ridge

Kirby McCord

Haunted by ghosts, a young Confederate soldier embarks on a dangerous diplomatic mission at the behest of Sam Houston.

It is July, 1863. The country is a vast graveyard. The carnage of Gettysburg, coupled with the capitulation of Vicksburg leave a Confederacy doomed to defeat.

But to former Texas Governor Sam Houston, it may be his last chance to save his beloved Texas from the ravages of war. Dishonored and ousted from office, Houston recruits young Travis Anderson to carry the diplomatic proposal of a separate peace to US President Abraham Lincoln.

Travis sets off for Washington in the company of Irish immigrant Michael Cohan. Along the way, they meet an escaped slave fighting for his child's freedom, pacific Cherokee shepherds just trying to escape the violence of war, bloodthirsty partisan raiders looking for any excuse to murder and loot, a patriotic Union cavalryman just trying to make it home in one piece, Travis' red-tressed former fiancee, combative brothers who served as engineers on the Underground Railroad, a reluctant Southern soldier wanting desperately to do the right thing, and an impetuous Southern belle with a nose for trouble.

The ghosts of Sam Houston's past and Travis' wartime friends uncannily accompany Travis, who finally meets with President Lincoln and the ghosts of war at the battlefield at Gettysburg.

What a rush! Great descriptions, wonderful action-- it grabs you by the throat and demands attention. ALso, an excellent job of giving us a back story on Jake without spending more than a few lines on it. Efficient. Kirby McCord Cemetery Ridge view book

Actually, it is accurate. One of the incongruities of the Civil War. Also, the blue topcoat makes a reappearance later in the book and is (as are many references to Garnett in the Prologue, highly symbolic. view book

What a great opening! I like Cordelia-- she has character and tries to please others. The race up the path is expertly choreographed-- nice job that. Kirby McCord Cemetery Ridge view book

Great descriptions. Good pace. I'll read more, but my problem is I don't like Mary. I'm hoping I can get to like her soon, because everything else about this book is terrific. Kirby McCord Cemetery Ridge view book

OK, I'm not a big sci-fi fan. But I am a fan of wonderful writing, and this is wonderful writing. The descriptions in here are absolutely magnetic. The opening sequence is some of the best writing I've ever read. Most would have described the destruction of the planet in "clinical" terms, but yo... view book
