about me

I'm a mother of two gorgeous noisy boys. Writing fiction has hijacked my life and so I'm usually to be found with a laptop welded to my fingers and the house in a permanent state of neglect. I live in Dorset, England.

A SHIRTFUL OF FROGS is only partially uploaded. It is the first in a timeslip series.

A SHIRTFUL OF FROGS

Shalini Boland

The life of a WW2 evacuee collides with the world of a boy from the present day, in this timeslip adventure.

Cheeky Jimmy Sweeney lives in the East End of London with his ten brothers and sisters. WW2 breaks out and he is evacuated to the country. He’s now an outcast, a ‘vac’, bullied by the local kids and treated cruelly by Mrs Cribbins, the woman with whom he's been billeted.

The story jumps to 2011, to twelve-year-old Nathan Pepper who has just moved from London to the country. One night he awakens to the sound of crying. He follows the sound to discover six-year-old Jimmy in the attic.

The attic is a bridge between the two eras and over time the boys become friends. But Nathan discovers that something terrible is about to happen to Jimmy and realises it’s up to him to save his friend.

What a great story! I've been reading this to my two boys and they've thoroughly enjoyed it. What age group is this targeted at? My two are 5 and 9 and I had to shorten some of the lengthier paragraphs to stop their attention wandering. If you streamlined it a little, it would be perfect for the 7-9... view book

Another gorgeous little poem! I'll read it to my youngest when he gets home from school.. I have a few suggestions, but feel free to ignore! - line 2 - too many syllables - 'culprit' might be too big a word for your target age. - how about, 'So you'll all be in big trouble if I find out that i... view book

Too cute for words! I'm going to read it to my 4-year-old tomorrow - He loves 'Duck in the Truck', so he'll love this. One tiny niggle 'I'm glad to be on dry land, the water gave me such a scare' - too many syllables and it spoils your otherwise perfect rhythm. Still deserves 6 stars and a pla... view book

A wall, a key, a secret door - fantastic stuff! You already know I'm a fan of your writing - it's perfect for your middle grade target audience - dialogue heavy and intrigue aplenty, (Aplenty? Who says aplenty?). Anyway, it looks like you're writing another winner. I love the relationship between... view book

It reads like a piece of art - I would get something different out of it each time. But it's not a book I would normally choose to read as I had to work too hard to catch the flow. I'd rather you hooked me in with a smoother narrative before breaking off into such intense images and dialogue. Saying... view book
