about me

I have a very cool career, even if some call it a despicable profession. I’m an award-winning television news photojournalist for NBC News in Los Angeles—yeah, I know. Media. But it’s been a fascinating career. My coverage has taken me around the world, from Olympic games to political elections; from Pope John Paul’s last North American visit to major news events like Columbine and 9/11. Outside of news, I had the pleasure of working as principal photographer on several episodes of the half hour weekly show Travel Cafe, shooting in Fiji, Hong Kong, and Kauai, to name a few. I also completed a documentary on nationally renowned artist, Milford Zornes—one of the coolest human beings I’ve ever met. Man! I want to be like him when I’m 90.

In the writing realm, my novel MOTOR DOLLS is my passion project. I was signed with an agent, who had me convert to YA, but the novel never really worked YA and the publishers agreed. I've now converted it back to adult, and will focus on the emerging "New Adult" category. I’ve had two short stories published, one about a girl who thinks she’s the reincarnated soul of a shi-tzu, the other about a girl who dreams of being a fish. Yep. My two weirdest stories. That’s what got published. The fish story was even chosen as the feature story in Flash Me magazine. Someday I'll get to shopping my other four novels.

I'm a founding member of the GASOLINE GIRLS car club, a group of girls who love to wrench their vintage rides. I live in Southern California with my best feller, twenty-four motorcycles, three cars, and my super cool ’48 Ford Truck named Bondorella.

MOTOR DOLLS

Lori B. Law

Heart stopping stunts, stunning photography, and a mysterious man in grey with nefarious plans…

Welcome to the world of the MOTOR DOLLS.

Jeda, a graphic artist believes she’ll die before her twenty-first birthday, and Benny, her vintage-loving friend, finds her calling documenting Jeda’s final days on film.

Because of a vague childhood conversation, Jeda is convinced she'll die young. For her last Summer of Thrills, she enlists the help of Meredith "Benny" Bentley—a graduate student in meltdown—who will chronicle Jeda’s final days on film. But when Benny begins to document Jeda's antics—diving into a tank of orange dye, flying off a pier with a handmade kite, luging downhill on a skateboard—they learn the truth behind the enigmatic man in grey; a truth that tests the foundations of Jeda's family and of their friendship as they race to solve the mystery of Jeda’s life.
***

Set against a subculture of vintage cars, tattoos, and pinup fashion, MOTOR DOLLS takes the reader on an adventure-filled ride in search of life’s passion. Every generation has its alt-girls: Cleopatra, Bettie Page, Gwen Stefani. Jeda and Benny reflect that same non-conformist alt-girl vibe. MOTOR DOLLS has the girl bonding in crisis of Thelma and Louise crossed with the quirky zest of Alan Martin’s cult classic Tank Girl.

Very intriguing opening. At first, I saw him staring into the face of another, so some of the writing felt like a change of POV since he wouldn't see the tears in his eyes. The reveal of the mirror later in the chapter was a nice "aha" moment. I particularly liked the way you set up his grandmother... view book
