Her Life as She Knew It

Karen Schwind

A young woman uncovers secrets that lay bare the shame of her people and force her to learn about love and letting go.

Karen Schwind brings us Caroline McKee, a girl on the cusp of womanhood who is determined to right the wrongs former friends did to her. She gets her chance when Billy Taylor, a veteran of the Great War, returns to Greensboro and opens a newspaper in the spring of 1919. Together they dig into the lives of townspeople until Caroline discovers a secret that lays bare the sorrow and shame of people she’s known all her life. Publishing a front-page story of betrayal and tragedy, Caroline learns a lesson that only her devout Christian father could teach--about love, loyalty and letting go.

I, too, like the beginning and find it to be very effective. Two suggestions: we all make typos, but I think studying grammar and punctuation would help you make your sentences a bit smoother. Might I suggest you go on OWL and work some of the exercises? (link: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/exercise... view book

Hi Bill, I've read the first few chapters and wish I had time to read the rest. I have a short list of books on AU that I wish I could get on my Kindle, and yours is one of them. I like the cover, too--very 1950s. I'm rating this and putting it on my watch list. If you have time, please ta... view book

This is a great read. Might I suggest that you combine the first two or three chapters so that you get to the action faster? I wasn't pulled in for quite a while, so combining and cutting would thrust your reader into the story more quickly. I would also go through and take out 50% of the adverbs an... view book

Hi Robert, This is well written and very engaging. I have one question: it's my understanding that the plague came from the fleas on rats. Could it spread in a frozen country? I'm starring this and putting it on my watch list. If you haven't done so, please take time to look at the lates... view book
