about me

Hello, everyone. The online workshop to which I have belonged for nearly a decade is dying a slow death, so I've decided to branch out.

I've been writing short fiction for nearly six years. I have published nearly 60 short stories professionally. Some of the journals I have appeared in include Night Train, SmokeLong Quarterly, wigleaf, 3 AM Magazine, JMWW Journal, Prick of the Spindle, Pindeldyboz, Temenos and others.

Right now I'm working on a linked-story collection. It's the story of a love triangle among three gay men, two urban, one rural. There's sex, drugs, voyeurism, incest, and all sorts of unwholesomeness!

I look forward to beginning to post in-progress work here and also discovering some new authors. If I can keep up the current rate of output, I should have a new story/chapter available twice a month. Getting tired just thinking about that! If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask!

I'm trying to honor all requests for reviews at present. From what older members have told me, that will get more difficult as time goes on, but I'll give it my best. Right now, I'm limiting myself to reviewing first chapters only so I can encounter as many authors as possible. I'll revisit works I especially liked at a later date. Thanks! Looking forward to the reads.

Best,

Thomas Kearnes

You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone

Thomas Kearnes

A love triangle among a wealthy voyeur, a young meth addict and an HIV-positive erotic photgrapher ends in disaster.

Darren wants to be loved. Cutter wants a happy home. Max wants to see the world through his lens. Through 15 interconnected short stories, we follow Darren's journey from his emotionally twisted but "safe" relationship with wealthy voyeur Cutter to his burgeoning one with the distant, HIV-positive erotic photographer Max. The three men embark on a journey of casual sex, crystal meth, pornography, unhappy romances, incest, predatory men, bathhouses and toxic relatives as each makes his clumsy, doomed trek toward a true and sustaining love. A world away from the comforting gay stereotypes of "Will and Grace" and "Queer As Folk," you never knew the underbelly of gay life could be so treacherous

Janell, I was just recently let into the Brutal Honesty group, so I'm not sure if we're required to read entire manuscripts before offering critique or not. If so, I'll happily go through the rest of your book. But I've read the first three chapters, and I believe I've gleaned enough information ... view book

AJ, I'm trying to expose myself to as many authors as possible, so I'm limiting myself to first chapters only. After I've gotten a good amount of reviews under my belt, I'll revisit the novels I found most compelling. For starters, this is certainly an excellent premise for a novel. I admit, I... view book

William, Thank you for your nice introductory note. That was very thoughtful. I appreciated it. I'll tell you up front that I'm limiting myself to reviewing first chapters only for the time being. Diana, Hi there. I'm new here, so I'm limiting myself to only reading first chapters so I can encounter as many different authors as possible. I'll return to read more at a later date. I really like your writing style. It's simple, plain-spoken, efficient yet very evocative. I could envision p... view book

SJ, You certainly know how to grad a reader. I admit, I was a little concerned reading your prologue, if for no other reason than because the Hungover Protagonist is an opening device as old as the hills. But your descriptions were evocative and your prose was crisp and efficient despite the nume... view book
