about me

I remember writing my first short story at the age of eight and having a morbid interest in the supernatural even then. I write fantasy, speculative fiction, some horror and a little sci-fi while fighting the urge to turn everything into a comedy. Everything's funny if you look at it the right way.

Compulsion is my first attempt at writing to novel length and it just is what it is; a short fantasy novel with no great ambitions. I wrote it in nine days for my own amusement. If it amuses anyone else, then good.

Metamorphic Mysteries is a collection of shorts about all the supernatural and mythic things that have always fascinated me but set in OUR world, the real modern world, because the thought of how shapeshifters and other creatures would live in the normal world seems to be a limitless source of hilarity to me.

The Last Wolf and Other Scottish Tales is for the most part about something I really care for; Scotland and the demented imaginations of ancient Scots who came up with the most inventive and poetic ideas to explain the world they lived in. I keep finding new things about this country that capture my imagination and make me want to write.

I'm currently working on a Metamorphic Mysteries novel.

The Last Wolf and Other Scotti....

Mags Campbell

A lonely werewolf sits on a remote stone and a village appears in a glen once a year. Stories inspired by the myths of Scotland.

Scotland's rich history and beautifully evocative mythology inspire these diverse stories of a gentle werewolf, the ghosts of an industry almost dead, a village where time doesn't pass, a Highland mystery solved at last, brownies and fairies, old gods in the modern world, dancing vampires, a cannibal clan, giants who sleep a restless sleep...

Metamorphic Mysteries Collecti....

Mags Campbell

A collection of humorous short stories featuring an array of shapeshifters, werewolves and other 'mythological' creatures as they live in normal human society.

There are rules in underworld society and Quinn Gault flouts them all.

From the first story, Reader, follow shapeshifter Quinn through encounters with fairies, sorcerers, werewolves, demons, hobgoblins, internet conspiracy theorists and a shadowy underworld police force.

All set against the background of a normal human city where all the fairy tale monsters and legendary beings hide in plain sight, the Metamorphic Mysteries are told in a tongue-in-cheek private detective style.

Compulsion

Mags Campbell

Rianne meets Gregor, a man with compulsions even stronger than her own. Was their meeting really due to chance?

Rianne Carter is a student with an obsessive compulsive disorder. An encounter with a stranger who comes to her aid when she's in danger seems to mean the start of a powerful relationship but what exactly is Gregor hiding?

He's good looking, great in bed and independently wealthy but there's a lack of food in Gregor's kitchen, he's evasive about his past and he has an aversion to sunlight. If he would start brooding like a proper tortured soul and stop insisting on having a pulse and sense of humour, he could be a really good tragic hero.

Rianne is pulled into the world of the supernatural and finds out that few of the old legends have even a grain of truth in them.

Although there are still many reasons to be afraid...

Your pitch is good and, as a horror reader, I would be interested in reading more. The critique I can offer is that you really should tighten up your sentences. I know how hard it is to fight against a natural instinct to be verbose and flowery but really putting the effort into simple, clean writ... view book

Great ideas. I love short stories and the whole process of writing them. There should be more collections of shorts out there. The only thing I would say is to be really careful with editing. You need to tighten up your writing and weed out the errors. view book

I'm not a big reader of this genre but it is a massively popular one and you seem to have excellent knowledge of the style and facts. Good luck. view book

Thanks a lot. Great to hear that you enjoyed it. I was reading one of the stories today to edit it before uploading a little more and I laughed out loud at one of my own lines so... yeah, the whole thing is purely for fun. Almost finished uploading the ten that make up this book and a couple of ... view book
