about me

Look out world, here I come! Yes, I am an author on a rampage to assault the publishing world with timely, witty, commercially successful writing. When I'm not busy fighting for my cause, I enjoy reading (duh), scrapbooking, cooking, traveling, and music.

But seriously, my debut novel Reunion has thus far met with critical acclaim, incredible sales for a self-published book, and resounding positive feedback; however, I am still in desperate pursuit of an agent and/or publisher. Read my comment under the book to see some of the recent accolades and accomplishments. A trailer for Reunion is available on YouTube.

I welcome any contact from agents or publishers ... jl.penn@live.com.

I do accept read swap requests; HOWEVER, I do have the following "policy":
- You go first.
- I will reciprocate but I do not promise a backing - my backs are solely on merit.
- I am happy to offer comments. If your book is not for me, I will let you know and perhaps offer constructive criticism, but I will only do that in a message, not as a public comment. I only post publicly when I have good things to say about your work.
If this works for you, then send away!

Since it has come up a few times ... Reunion is actually available for purchase. Signed copies are available on my website (jlpenn.com) and unsigned copies are theoretically available from any book retailer although it's easiest to find at Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com. It's also available for Kindle.

Best of luck to all of you and kudos for finishing a novel - an accomplishment in itself! :)

The Cinderella Curse

J.L. Penn

This is the hilarious tale of a girl who whacks a witch, gets cursed, and becomes a pumpkin at midnight. Sound strange? She thinks so!

Cindy had a fairy tale life – well, not literally – but she was pretty and popular. Then one fateful autumn day, while picking apples, she encountered a real-life witch. After accidentally clocking the witch on the head with her basket of apples, the angry witch put a spell on her. As Cindy would soon find out, she was destined to live out her nights turning into a pumpkin at midnight. Talk about a crimp in your social life!

There is only one antidote for Cindy’s terrible curse - if only she knew what it was. Hilarity ensues as Cindy attempts to lead a normal life as a part-time pumpkin.

THIS IS A NOVELLA. THE COMPLETE VERSION IS ON AMAZON & SMASHWORDS. IF YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO READ ONE OF MY PROJECTS, PLEASE READ REUNION, AS IT'S MY PRIMARY FOCUS. THANKS!

Reunion

J.L. Penn

A lighthearted and witty yet suspenseful story about how an innocent Facebook reunion with an old high school crush turns one woman’s life upside down.

Meet Jessica Stratford, a level-headed girl next door with an enviable life of professional and marital success ... well, except for that one little uncharacteristically impetuous detail that changes everything. When a friend talks Jessica into finally embracing the digital age, Jessica's life slowly turns upside down.

You see, Jessica finds her old high school crush on Facebook. In fact, she finds him quite attractive even after twenty years. A simple hello seems harmless enough until he suggests that they meet for lunch. Of course, lunch is ... just lunch. Then harmless lunch becomes harmless text messages, late night chats, and dinners. But are they really as innocuous as she likes to think they are?

If the person who would not give you the time of day in high school suddenly wanted to give you all the time in the world, would you be tempted? How far would you go in vindicating your high school obsession? Follow Jessica on the journey to her ultimate choice. Will she remain faithful to her steadfast husband, or will she succumb to nostalgic desire for the one that got away?

Miss Taken Identity

J.L. Penn

Emily's boring job gives her the opportunity to become a wealthy heiress. Will it be all she hoped and will she get away with it?

Emily Sullivan's life is in the crapper. She is barely on speaking terms with her mother and sister, she has a dead-end data entry job at the Department of Public Records, she is new to the area with only her boyfriend to call a friend, and bad things seem to give way to worse things for Emily. That is, until her boring dead-end job offers her the unique opportunity to become someone else - a wealthy reclusive heiress who is presumed dead after a major fire at her mansion.

Stephanie Watson is the ill-mannered perpetually half-drunk British heiress who has led the kind of lifestyle Emily can barely imagine. With the opportunity for a new life of wealth and the potential for fame, what will Emily do with it, and will she get away with it?

Author's Note: This is a first draft of my second novel that is currently in progress. I welcome any constructive criticism and feedback! More will be uploaded as it becomes available. IF YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO READ ONE OF MY BOOKS, PLEASE READ REUNION INSTEAD. THAT NOVEL IS COMPLETE AND IS THE ONE I'M IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET PUBLISHED. THANKS!

This is definitely literary fiction and definitely evocative writing. You know your genre! Backed with kudos, and best of luck! -Jenn view book

Your pitch is excellent! I feel I'm not a good judge of the interior because it's just not something I would ordinarily read. I'll back this on the excellent pitch and assume the interior is right for the genre. Best of luck! -Jenn view book

Love the premise and the style. The long pitch is good, but I think the short pitch needs work. The entire second sentence of the short pitch needs a rewrite because it reads more like a review than a pitch (I should know because I'm guilty of that sort of thing myself ;)). I think this will work... view book
