about me

As a magazine editor in New York City, I've spent a career getting to know all sorts of real-life characters, good and bad. Some are famous, some are infamous and some are just downright odd and annoying.

Now it's time to channel some of what I've observed into a novel. I've been working on this for a long time (after all, I have a day job). But I'm constantly editing this work and will continue to do so until it's published... or until I throw the damn thing into the Hudson River.

NOTE: Thanks to all of you who helped The Prophet of Doom earn an Authonomy gold star and reach the HarperCollins editor's desk. I am deeply grateful. It was a special privilege to finish in the top five with my friend Patrick Barrett, the talented author of Shakespeare's Cuthbert. Get well soon, Patrick. We have some celebrating to do. :-)
Cheers - Mark

The Prophet of Doom

Mark Mayfield

A successful novelist becomes the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife, forcing him to face well-guarded secrets from his past.

Micah Battle is a writer who gained notoriety when one of his books foreshadowed a national tragedy. Now he is writing a novel about a man who murders his wife, disposes of her body and reports her as a missing person. Suddenly Micah's own wife vanishes, and police quickly name him a suspect in her disappearance.

To save himself and possibly his wife, Micah must face demons from his past. Police have their own secrets. Unknown to the media, they are tracking a series of murders that could be linked to this latest missing persons case... and to Micah Battle. Larkin Law, a tenacious young reporter, is determined to discover the truth. She is about to uncover far more than she ever imagined.

Beryl, This gets off to a very strong start with Harry's first person narrative. It is introspective, and very deftly handled. His longing for Charlotte is dramatic, and his fear over the history of leukemia in his family provides a tense ending to the chapter. You have a lot of writing talent. ... view book

Kev, I've read enough to know this is a well written thriller that takes time to build strong characterization. Chapter two, with Chris is a perfect example. (He's a bold guy, having sex with the guy's wife while he's sleeping upstairs.) The mix of narration and dialogue seems spot on. Good stuff.... view book

Helen, I like your voice here. This is very strong storytelling. The writing flows smooth and easy, a real pleasure to read. I can see Renia has her own concerns about her gift of seeing the future, and she clearly has a lot to deal with early on in this book with the rescue of the stranger on the ... view book

There is something about the juxtaposition of a prison cell in Winslow, Arizona, and an alien friend named Ron that just seems to work splendidly. This is such an entertaining, well written book. I laughed when that cigarette butt falls between driver Jeff Lightfoot's legs in the car and smoke billo... view book

Janet, I think this races along faster than any vampire story I've seen on authonomy. Viadimir is a murderer, of course, but I like this guy! Who could resist a vampire who says: "I'm a good looking guy and I know it. If that makes me arrogant, so I'm arrogant. Sue me." Love it. The pace is just... view book
