The Plain of Crowns

Kevin Hincker

Anthony, 13, burdened with paranormal gifts and suffocating grief, meets a radiant, mystical Queen Bee, whose friendship will either heal his sorrow or kill him.

Anthony loses his mother to cancer when he is nine. Four years pass, while grief, bitter and heavy like clotted honey, slowly chokes him. He clings to his mother's memory by tending the colony of honey bees she left him when she died -- but Anthony is no ordinary bee keeper. He has a paranormal ability to communicate with hive-minds, a dangerous ability his mother made him forswear on her deathbed. When Anthony turns thirteen and finds his mother's hive is dying, he fears his final link to her will be lost, until a mysterious queen bee appears and his colony begins to recover. Soon he must use his forbidden powers to fight the dark legions pursuing this little queen, while she guides him down the path which will forever heal his terrible grief -- or kill him.

First book I've read on Authonomy which I would absolutely buy. Tight, forward leaning, funny, lucid with a voice both loud and subtle. I'd offer to be a beta reader for future chapters, except that I want to see what really happens, not the first draft of what really happens. And if that seems self... view book

YARG review. Read through to chap 8, will finish soon. I believe in your world, which is so great. The names, the directions (n,s,e,w) the descriptions, the interactions of the various different groups of people, all very seamless and powerful. The way the magical elements are introduced and dealt w... view book

Thanks for posting. I found tremendous poetry in this prose, although much (most) of it came from using words and phrases in unexpected and unconventional ways, some might say incorrect. This may work in your favor, it may work against you (I think for the most part the latter, at this point) but it... view book

Hey Ivan, reading per your request. Prologue: "It shivered, snatching at his life. He felt its pulse." Presume this is referring to the abyss. Not quiet tracking - how did an abyss shiver? Would love a more detailed description of that. Would make the subsequent lines more compelling. Many rep... view book

As per your request, my impressions, from the top of the first chap. I like the elements where you get very specific about the physical environment, the lipstick on the cup, the color of the pillow. You have an eye for those kinds of details, and the scene will only get stronger will only get st... view book
