about me

FIVE THINGS ABOUT ME

1. I've been married 17 years to my househubby. Together we're raising four magnificent creative life forces, ages 8 to 14, whose entertainment value rivals any Broadway show or television sitcoms, for that matter. I come home from my job, brain-dead, frazzled, stressed out. Yet there's something about walking in the front door at the end of the day, and these children of mine rush up to me as if I've got static cling. "MOM, GUESS WHAT!" "WAIT A MINUTE! I WAS HERE FIRST!" "DID YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY?" "ROBERT SPIT ON ME AT RECESS!" And I'm just cracking up over this glorious cacophony. Love is loud, you know.

2. I'm an avid lip-reader due to a lifelong profound hearing loss in both ears. One time, upon introducing myself to a nurse-practitioner, I informed her of my hearing loss. She replied, "I'm so glad you told me that because I tend to speak very fast." "Don't worry," I said. "I'm a speed-reader."

3. I've been writing since the third grade. I have stories published in several Chicken Soup books and other inspirational publications. However, nothing rivals the first time I was published. When I was 20, one of my poems appeared in a magazine called "Gallaudet Today," for which I was not paid. As a result of this priceless experience, I received beautiful letters from deaf high school students from Tallahassee, Florida, who had enjoyed my funny little poem about a teenaged girl with hearing aids on her first date.

4. Looking back at the total sum of my experiences as an Army brat, I feel blessed to have traveled as far and wide as I have. I learned about diversity, courage in making new friends, and the art of adapting to any environment. When I was in elementary school, one of my sisters gave me a plastic lunchbox in the shape of a giant pickle. It had room for a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, a bag of chips, and a soda. It turned out to be my breaking-the-ice buddy for each new school I attended. Other kids gravitated to my quirky lunchbox, thus meeting the new kid on the block with owl-like glasses with stems that shoved hearing aids through her hair.

5. I'm a veteran NICU mom three times over, starting with the birth of my oldest son who was born the week of Christmas, weighing 1 lb, 6 ounces. My other two sons were born a month early and stayed in the NICU for immature lungs. My last baby, a girl, was blessedly free of any problems to warrant a pass to the NICU. After six heart-rending years of infertility prior to the birth of my first child, I am thankful for each and every one of my blessings.

My life overflows.

The Only Living Boy

Aubrey Emerson

Noah Emerson was shot by the grandson of the King of the Gypsies. Little did he know it would be the least of his problems.

His was a life that was very much like the turtles he rescued: up-ended, frustrated, angry at the injustice. He couldn’t help but wonder for the times when he was as helpless as a turtle, straining to get back on track, who came to his rescue?

Based on true events, this novel traces the journey of one ordinary man wrestling with extraordinary odds. A mother with an undiagnosed mental illness. A father buried in his job. The long line of bullies. An act of road rage with a man profiled in Peter Maas’ book “The King of the Gypsies.”

His name is Noah Emerson. This is his story.

Wife Seeking Wife

Jennifer Oliver

Cancer. Again. Four small children. A househubby in serious denial. No future in a perennial fixer-upper on a remote pecan farm in New Mexico.

For Grace Hutton, there is only one thing to do:

"I am a wife seeking a wife."

Grace Hutton launches this evocative quest on her web site, wondering if there is someone out there capable of handling "this much beauty in one household." Her missive in peddling her unsuspecting househubby, Vaughn Hutton, generates unforeseen and at times, hilarious complications, but in the process she gains a cyber-friend in Madilynn Broussard, a woman from Cranberry Falls, Texas. A woman consumed by the loss of her husband and son.

Unbeknownst to Madilynn, an invitation to spend Thanksgiving with the Hutton family marks the first step toward healing, and ultimately romance.

This journey supports the premise that love and romance are not reserved for long-legged blondes in the muscled arms of reckless heroes. Infused with warmth and humor, Wife Seeking Wife explores the intersecting journeys between two courageous women, and the men who love them. It proves that love can flourish in the presence of obstacles and very often, in spite of them.

Rachel May, this is much tighter! In the first chapter, the lead-in with her finding the box is perfect, followed by the dream, and then that wistful closing “It’s always just me.” Just one niggle: remove the second “the” from “behind the closed the door of my bedroom.” To be honest, in chapte... view book

Allie, keep in mind that I’m an American, an Army brat who enjoyed three years living in Germany as a small child. I came back to the states kicking and screaming when my father’s job forced us to relocate to another installation. I felt as if I were being ripped away from fairyland with gnomes an... view book

Dale, I’m wearing many hats as I read this: reader, writer, copyeditor, and ultimately…fan. Disclaimer up front: I don’t read science fiction much (the last one I read was “The Handmaiden’s Tale”), but my oldest son is a huge SF buff…particularly Isaac Asimov. I think he would really like w... view book

First of all, Happy Birthday, Jan! I’ve always loved the premise of blurring the lives of both real and fictional characters, but this was a fun one, having a husband read about his own “demise.” One cannot help but feel Maggie’s pain. You’ve captured the side effects of her heartbreak perfectl... view book

Lexi, based on Charles’ enthusiastic endorsement of your work on the forums, I wanted to drop by and see what all the fuss was about. Now I can see why. You’ve got a page-turner on your hands here, a must-have for a mystery. Your writing is exceptional as well as the pacing, the dialogue, all the... view book
