about me

Mercencary narratologist. Vocational tourist. Cosmopolitan vagabond. He might be considered a reluctant maverick.

He's in it without any altruistic delusions. He does what he does for his own sake. He learns as much, if not more, from sharing as he does from study and application. If sharing a few insights he's gleaned from personal experience or evaluating another writer's work for his own ends offers useful input, it's all to the good.

Meanwhile, in the metaphysical realm, his Muse Diane requires him to pay forward before she will allow him to move forward.

favourite books

I don't have a favorite book, story, creative vision, or creative slant. I'm a reading ominvore. I have a range of novels on my test bench for evaluating method, contrasting and comparing, and for inspiring emulation.

Recent and past reads that hold my interest and engage me deeply, or are on my must-read list, by author in no particular order; Maugham, E. Annie Proulx, Donna Tart, Mark Richard, Thomas Harris, Ludlum, Grisham, Clancy, Rowling, Marjorie Rawlings, Tolkien, Hemingway, Cherryh, Card, Stoker, Michener, Shelley, Wells, Orwell, Baum, Dr. Seuss, DiCamillo, Meyers, Jacqueline Susann, Niffenegger, Lawrence, Nabokov, Chekhov, Dostoyevski, Gurdjief, Vonnegut, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Cassidy, Ospenski, London, Dickinson, Austen, Bradley, McCaffrey, Kesey, Wolf, Wolfe, and Wolff, Cormier, Voigt, Homer, Geoffrey of Monmouth, and on and on into and througout the opus of literature. Alas, there's so little time for the best of the best.

I read the first chapter noticing less alienation effect than I expected. Good writing at the line level. Fairly good writing on the structural level, though I see room for improvement. On the line level, some overwrought prose came across a little melodramatically, making me conscious of the nar... view book

I've looked at _Mirror in the Sky_ several times over the past few weeks. Something about the narrative voice disengaged me each time. So I examined the first sentence closely and found an answer for what didn't sit well with me. An alienation effect is coming from an unsettled narrative voice. A... view book

I've my granpop's mass market hardcover copy of Anna Sewell's _Black Beauty_ here to hand. A sentimental treasure, it was read by him in his youth, circa 1900. I've read Marguerite Henry's Chincoteague pony novels, Misty and Stormy, and grabbed up all the horse whisperer books and documentaries and ... view book

I read the first few chapters. My preconceived expectations are largely met. I like the cynical, ironic, self-deprecating voice,.The craft is spot on. In terms of story, I wasn't overwhelmed but see great potential. The main concern I have is the opening chapter doesn't quite achieve the empathy ... view book

A better than average pitch, in my estimation. There are strong traces of voice in the pitch that makes me optimistic about the story. It does one thing I believe a pitch shouldn't do. It almost or entirely gives away the outcome. Lying and dying and the final punishment suggest a fatal outcome. ... view book
