about me

I am a cultural anthropologist, turning some pretty amazing experiences into even more interesting fiction. i have published a textbook and many academic articles, but MAGE AT MIDNIGHT is my first work of fiction [self-published on Amazon]. I am now working on a second book, set in Istanbul.

I have not submitted MAGE AT MIDNIGHT to any editor or publisher, but I am interested in finding an agent. Contact me at cheinz@freeuniversity-gh.org. [There is an older version of the book available in print form on Amazon].

Mage at Midnight

Carolyn Brown Heinz

An American teacher, a Hindu swami, and an antiquities smuggling ring fight it out over a black stone goddess in the holy city of Rishikesh.

An angry black goddess kicks off a heel in her rage and sends it flying to the opposite side of India, setting off—two centuries later—a three-way scramble ending in the holy city of Rishikesh. Annie, a retired schoolteacher, has the heel, which she must bring from America to a young renunciant in trouble. Nic and Seema, high-end antiquities smugglers, are after the goddess’s whole body, a work of art sure to bring a high price in the antiquities market—if they can find her. And an ambitious swami claims that the black goddess incarnates in a succession of beautiful young women who are unwilling players in his sex cult for the rich and famous.

Looks like an intelligent novel taking form. I would buy this book if I encountered it in a bookstore. Fine clean vivid writing, and an original idea. . . an opera singer as protagonist. I'm definitely backing this one. view book

Thank you so much for these kinds words and the support. And thanks for getting as far as the ashram part of the book! Most people don't. I think the 'reappearances' of the mage aspect of Annie might be overly subtle; I think of her as reappearing twice, once during the scene with the flashlight... view book

Hi Andy, This is a book I'd definitely buy and read. Contemporary Kathmandu, real-world, strong narrative. I had one thought about Cho. It's always hard to find English equivalents for foreign language conversations, and maybe Cho and Ryan were speaking English anyway. But would Cho, a guy from ... view book
