about me

When Thomas was a child, his ambition was to write storybooks. Many other things got in the way, including owning three cats, ringing tower bells, writing sonnets, moving to Cambridge, becoming a parent, unexpectedly emigrating to Pennsylvania, learning to make fudge, and maintaining interesting but obscure parts of computer systems. Nevertheless, he is still writing.

Not Ordinarily Borrowable

Thomas Thurman

A scholar's library books are stolen by a dragon; on the ensuing adventure she finds courage, magic, friendship and the end of her thesis.

Maria is occupied with trying to earn her doctorate, and she's far too busy for adventures. But when the library books she needs are unexpectedly borrowed (by a dragon) she finds herself on a quest to find the books, the dragon, a sword, courage, and the greatest cake recipe in the world... not to mention the last chapter of her thesis. Along the way she meets King Arthur, George Berkeley, Geoffrey of Monmouth, and a resourceful friend named Jennifer, and discovers that even dragons can be helpful at times.

"Not Ordinarily Borrowable; or, Unwelcome Advice" is loved by adults as well as by children from eight to twelve. This is a partial upload, but the book is completely written at 15,000 words. The book has its own site at http://borrowable.net.

Thank you! There are two more stories in my head about Maria and Jennifer, but I don't know whether or when I'll write them; it depends how well "Borrowable" is received. People seem to be liking it so far, though, so that's encouraging. The book was in fact written for both a real child a... view book

Thrilling and disturbing: a view into a mind whose outlook I don't want to share but can hardly look away from. Hope it does well. "A single wall. Blank and empty. Like himself." is a lovely line. Nitpick: "Your eyes were empty pools": I have trouble imagining someone saying this out loud; ... view book

Interesting premise, and the story carries us along. I like the quotations from magical textbooks at the heads of chapters. I have the feeling that you seem to underuse the word "said", though. In the first chapter, "Canon Peter's crossed himself" should lose the apostrophe. view book

Gripping, exciting, professional. The story just keeps on coming at you. A pleasure to back it, and I hope it does well. view book
