about me

I work in London for a large advertising agency where I battle daily against focus groups, international sensitivities and egos to produce creative work of some merit. I occasionally manage. Not often, but occasionally.
I started life in a small in agency in Cheltenham, where I started at the bottom and stayed there for some time before leaving to work freelance for a number of agencies in the South West of England. I eventually decided to make the leap to our smelly and expensive capital after producing one tiresome advert trumpeting the benefits of extrusion mould tooling’s too many. I now write ads in all mediums as well as work with people much more talented than I to make them look good.
I am married with two small children and live in Bedford.
Can you sell my cooker? is my first novel.

Ian Boyle

Three strained relationships. Two contrasting locations. One man trying to make sense of it all.

The world of advertising can be a glamorous one, with interesting clients, famous names and photo shoots in exotic locations. However life in a provincial agency can be very different. Nick Willet, Creative Director of Havershaw Willet and Rose, has accepted that he will never share a fortnight in the Caribbean with Kate Moss, extolling the virtues of the Teeny-Weeny Bikini Company. Instead he works with a roster of clients who make such items as office chair castor wheels, scented candles and disposable bedpans.
Through a shared client Nick gets to travel to their advertising agency in London. Here he encounters a world quite alien to the one he is used to. During a particularly testing period of his life, Nick has to deal with three different relationships, none of which are as they first appear. Set between the sedate Cotswolds town of Haverton and the cut and thrust of London, Nick gets embroiled in a world of false friendships, dishonesty and marital woe.

Hi Fran Here is my promised, if slightly overdue, return read and comment. When you commented on my book you said it was similar to yours, to be honest I thought it couldn't be more different. Mine is a light hearted romp whereas yours is borne out of extraordinary personal experience and reads lik... view book

Hi Diana Thanks for your comments. I have definitely been trying to edit this down and the comment about dialogue does seem to be a recurring one. I will try and get to your book soon and feedback. Good luck with your book and the TVC (I am currently in the editing process of my latest. Unfortunat... view book

Hi Fran Thanks very much for comments, kind words and gentle kick up the backside. One year and one bookshelf is pretty hopeless I agree. I think the reason is I haven't made enough effort to read and comment on other people's books and therefore can't expect them to reciprocate. I know this is an ... view book

Hi Pete Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate them. Some of them I have been addressing already (although haven't uploaded yet), like making the chapters shorter and cutting quite a bit of material that seemed superfluous on reflection. I will certainly bear your other comments in mind too.... view book

Hi Karen I never normally read sci-fi and only planned to read the first three chapters. However I have just read the first six and have to say really enjoyed it. It's extremely well written and Kelvin, although deliberately dry and aloof, is a likeable character. I guess what I liked best was that... view book
