about me

I started writing about five years ago and this is my second novel. The first one lives in a cellar where I feed it leftovers and soothe it with classical music and airbrushed pictures of laughing hens. I've been offered places on two creative writing MAs but couldn't get the funding so I'm saving my pennies. I suppose I could make the money by paying me to teach myself but I get a headache every time I think the plan through. 'A Long Way from Normal' is the result of two ideas being forced to like each other. I hope you enjoy it.

A Long Way From Normal

Richard Kelly

A dying man is visited by a boy in a mask, a character from a novel that he never completed.

Riddled with regret the nameless narrator, a dying, bedridden businessman, is visited by a boy in a mask, a character he recognises from a novel that he never completed. He asks his nurse, Mila, to dig out the manuscript so that he can read and complete it. He begins to tell the story of David, a boy who glues the mask of his hero, Commander Chance, to his own face. As the tale unfolds so does the story of the businessman’s life with which he is deeply discontent. He hasn’t spoken to his son, Paul, for years and blames him for the death of his wife, the boy’s mother. Then there are the postcards from his soul-searching addict daughter who blames him for everything that’s gone wrong in her life. He tries to focus on completing the novel but, as he discovers, it’s not the only unfinished business.

Manuscript complete.

I love a bit of Magical Realism and you've made it work well here. I settled into the story straight off which is always a good sign for me, nicely written in a highly readable voice. I wish you success. All the best, Richard. view book

Hi Robert, while not a genre I would usually read I did enjoy your prose and the pacing is well done with every line moving the story along. I wish you success. All the best, Richard. view book

Peter, you have a wonderfully fluid style of writing that's a joy to read. I didn't have to read a few pages in order to settle into the book, I was there from the first. I'm really enjoying what I've read. Hope all is well with you. Richard. view book
