about me

I grew up in London in the 60's and 70's. Got the travelling bug early and never lost it. I've lived and worked in New York, Dublin, California, South America and Spain, and I'm now back in Camden Town with my wife and daughter. I've written articles for the music press and for sports magazines in the past. Hit The Road, Frank is my first novel, and there are more in the pipeline.

So now it's 2010 and I'm taking a break from this site for a while. I'll still be checking on my favourite books every now and then, so I will reply to messages eventually, but no more read swaps.

You don't need to know how much I like Dickens, Orwell, Steinbeck et al. Instead I've left a list of the ten works which have impressed me most on authonomy (in no particular order). Check them all out. It would have been twelve, but two of the books which I like most disappeared from the site before Christmas. Sea of Straw by Primrose Hill and Poor Bull by Vanessa Dalton. Hopefully it's because they've found a publisher.

Happy New Year and the best of luck with your writing in 2010

HIT THE ROAD, FRANK

BRIAN FORD

1974. Frank Downes is a young Londoner on the road in the USA who finds that leaving the past behind isn't so easy.

1974. The year of Nixon's resignation, Watergate and the Patti Hearst kidnapping. Frank Downes is a 24 year old Londoner living out his hitchhiking dreams across the USA. But Frank has unfinished business back in London. As his eventful journey takes him from New York City to the juke joints of Louisiana, the back roads of Texas and the fleshpots of Hollywood, he finds that conscience and responsibility cannot be avoided, and, to quote from a song of the time, you can travel on 10,000 miles and stay right where you are. A rollercoaster of a road novel, and a must read for rock, blues, and country music fans.

The first ten of sixteen chapters of Hit The Road, Frank, are currently available to view on this site. Respect and gratitude to Bradley Wind for the cover.

Excellent characters, dialogue and sense of place. These characters don't appear to be going anywhere, but it feels like they are always on the move, which is testament to your writing. Shelved.Best of luck with it. Brian Ford Hit The Road, Frank view book

I saw George Thorogood and the Destroyers play the Electric Ballroom Camden Town around the same time. My experience was quite the opposite. They turned up two hours late and wheeled out crates of lager which they handed out to the audience by way of apology. Only thing was it was at room temperatur... view book

Dago. First of all I found your pitch intriguing but slightly confusing at the same time. All in all I think it contains slightly too much information, and you could think about working on it a little. I then read chapters 1 to 6, and enjoyed them very much. You have a fine talent for characterisati... view book
