Strong start left me asking all sorts of questions and immediately we are into the story. I do have one suggestion here, the beginning sentence seemed too long, perhaps if you broke this up it may read better but that is only my opinion. Very descriptive and well observed. I can imagine you will have a good audience with this because kids love an MC with secrets and a character who finds a new life full of hope after having home life troubles.
