about me

I am an architect practicing in Hawaii and coming to an end of a 30 plus year career. I studied music right out of high school and was a musician for 3 years before my batteries ran out. After architecture school I returned to my home town of Laguna Beach, CA and worked there until 1979. In 1980 I married my wife of 31 years and moved to Santa Rosa, CA where we lived for 15 years.
I have been writing stories, music and lyrics as long as I can remember. My first completed novel (The Red Poppy) started out as a typical short piece, scratched out in pencil in a journal. One day a friend challenged me to turn it into a novel, and off I went.
Currently my wife and I live on the island of Maui and are parents to 3 lovely daughters. We are further blessed with 3 granddaughters. Our intent is to return to the mainland in 2012 so I can teach and pursue other dreams such as writing.

The Red Poppy

P Alan Davis

First contact between alien civilizations is challenging. Add deception along with malicious motives, and the mix becomes dangerous.

Born into privilege and growing up in the remote, high desert of the planet Valdi, Canar Nu Isso has graduated from the emissary program at the INSAT University. She aspires to follow in her father’s footsteps as an ambassador to civilized planets in new star systems. She is preparing for a long-awaited month vacation to the resort planet of Coppratee, and then her father invites her to become the lead ambassador for a mission. It is an enviable assignment that will take her to a star system 1,500 light years away from her home.
Canar learned in her studies that first contact between alien civilizations is filled with challenges, and her job as ambassador is to negotiate common grounds, sign treaties, and share knowledge. Little does she know that there are those who have malicious motives in this new system, and little does she know they will employ deception, intent on preventing her from making first contact with this new civilization. They will stop at nothing to disrupt the success of Canar's mission to further their unscrupulous ambitions. To the perpetrators, who include Canar’s best friend, all means to protect their interests are on the table, even murder.

Raindancer

P Alan Davis

Xanszia finds strange and perilous wonders just on the edge of the galaxy and her imagination.

To achieve her dream life, Lilienkala steals away in search of a home, husband, and happy existence, away from her brother. She travels across the galaxy in search of her happiness, taking her through space and time to many places, meeting different people, and experiencing the new and strange powers some posses. She encounters the Spia Tarteua and learns the truth of her mother’s bloodlines, and discovers she is a princess in the clan of Baan-Raindancer. In a surprising twist, it is here, in the realm of Raindancer, that she finds her desire, but in an unusual way.
Talen Opollu is next in the line of succession of the family Opollu, and all his life he feels responsible to protect the Navva bloodlines of his family. This is especially true with regard to his half-sister Lilienkala, who is the youngest and favorite daughter because of her great beauty.
Xanszia Opollu, the oldest sibling, is dispatched by her father to search for her womanizing brother, and their half-sister, Lilienkala. She too confronts the Spia Tarteua, but finds herself in a life and death struggle to save her half-sister from the narcissistic and brutal Spia.

Chained - by Karlee Hall I especially liked how you started with Jake's dream (or is it?). It gives the reader something to contemplate as the story moves forward. You have a good sense of the dramatic, and how to develop those elements within your story. Your writing is very nice, but like me, a ... view book

PLC Review: Normsville Trilogy: Bear Essentials (Book 1) The Prologue had a sense of a children's story and adult novel. Emily returning home, a sanctuary for a person who seems to have little social life, with the exception of that she share with her stuffed animals. I anticipate a stage being se... view book

Filty Luca by - Paul Beattie At times there are interludes of brilliant storytelling, unfolded with beautiful prose and imagery. Then, at times this story is confusing, the mixing of first person and third person, the strange use of italics that adds to the confusion. The prose has wonderful qualit... view book

The Angel Chord - by Derek Tobin I have much good to say about this novel, but, my only negative comment is, although the prose is artfully placed on the page, there is too much in some places. OK - that said, this is one of the best of the 60 works I have reviewed. Your sense of drama is keen and... view book

Loser by Gerald D Johnson A well-written and portrayed account of a disastrous life, the life of Avery. Through metaphor and good writing, the story unfolds and vividly paints Avery's troubled life. The language is appropriate and the accounts are as twisted as Avery's past. I read all five chapte... view book
