about me

Heather McLoud has vast experience with writing...in different parts of the country. She has written fiction in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, among the redwoods of California, on the plains of Wyoming, and in the humidity of North Carolina.

She considers her first completed novel to have been "110,000 words of good practice." Her second novel "Sage Courage" is in progress although the first seven chapters are up on this site. "Sage Courage" is a story of one woman's determination to overcome the challenge of living in a haunted house with a troop of traumatized children.

Sage Courage

Heather McLoud

Becoming the guardian of traumatized children in a haunted house was not the future Leila had in mind when she fled her abusive husband.

On the run from an abusive husband and out of gas money, Leila Stein is relieved to find a job babysitting Wyoming rancher Bill Colvin’s children. Her relief turns to worry when he leaves her in front of the ranch house with no idea how many children she has just agreed to care for. Coping with the traumatized children she finds in the house preoccupies her—but not enough to distract her from the feeling that while she is watching the children, something else is watching her.

I both love this book and am uncomfortable with some of the way you have presented the first chapter. Your writing is very, very skilled. Sentence by sentence you build up an atmosphere with rich description which is invitingly written. There are no major grammatical faux pas to distract. My prob... view book

This is perfect! Even though I don't know a thing about cricket I was laughing my way through the first chapter. Your writing doesn't suck. In point of fact, it is pretty damn wonderful. I've been riveted to the screen for the last half hour. I have to say your pacing is great, your sense of humor c... view book

Wow. There's a big problem with what you've posted here. It cuts off very abruptly and I want to read more. A lot more. Preferably the whole thing. I am not a fan of this genre but you do it very, very well. It was a very enjoyable read and I got totally lost in it which was a wonderful discovery in... view book

Just re-reading this. By the end of the first chapter I find I am holding my breath and I can't believe it because your writing is so smooth that this purely psychological crisis grips me with its urgency. I especially liked "with their bacteria and notepads." But it was all deeply satisfying to me.... view book

Fran, I am so glad you asked me to look at this. So far I’ve read the first two chapters and it has been both painful and eye-opening for me. I identify with every sentence. I have experienced many or most of these emotions and your description is so spot-on that it is difficult to read. Here are so... view book
