Zane is hit by lightning, but he's not dead--he's not even burned. But there's a live current inside that's raging to get out.
After Zane’s encounter with the lightning, he is both terrified and fascinated by the prickling electricity that zooms out of his hands. At first, he doesn’t connect it with his father’s incident years before and his dad’s resulting incarceration for murder. During a spontaneous out of body, when Zane’s dad, Rick, reveals that the lightning caused the murder, Zane divulges that the lightning is now inside him as well. Alarmed, Rick warns his “live wire” son to keep the lightning in at all costs.
Zane refuses the warning because he is suspicious that the lightning can also heal. His awkward attempt to experiment on the mysterious Raine Forrest, who inadvertently absorbs the despair of others, fails miserably, and she rebuffs his intrusion into her private world of pain.
Although Zane has had some success taming the electricity, he realizes that this is a force beyond his control, especially when he finds out that the lightning will absolutely kill him if he doesn’t use it. Still harboring feelings of hate for his father, Zane is duty-bound to keep his dad alive—and to keep himself from getting dead in the process.
