about me

APOLOGIES that I have not been on the site much recently and have rather neglected those friends and other people who have shown an interest in my work.

Having submitted The Taste of Salt to a number of agents and publishers and been greeted with universal rejections I have suffered something of a crisis of confidence which I am still working through.

For the time being, I will keep it on the site and respond when I can.

Of Northumbrian stock, as it happens, I have spent most of my life in Southern England. Home for me these days is in what used to be called "North Wessex" with my other half.

Earning a living led me into IT, but allowed me to indulge my passion for swanning around Europe pretending to be a cosmopolitan sophisticate (which I do rather well).

In terms of what I enjoy reading I'm a classic "90s man", by which of course I mean 1890s - give or take a decade or two either way. That said, I do appreciate being drawn into other weird and wonderful worlds as well.

While I have always enjoyed "scribbling", in terms of serious writing I'm a late developer. I suppose what led me to bash out my first novel (apart from a handy combination of egoism and a spell on the dole) was realising that, if I wanted to read a certain kind of book, I would damn well have to write it.

'The Taste of Salt" is at heart about the quest for love, against the dangers faced in time of war and the more subtle dangers of peace. For better or worse, it is still probably different to any other love story that you have read.

My ultimate ambition is to write the definitive novel of the 21st century, set largely in a car-park in Bracknell.

The Taste of Salt

Henrik Harrysson

What if, in the greatest sea war in history, it's love that hits you? And what if the peace that follows is even deadlier?

At 25 Jack is unsure of his place in the the world, caught in the middle of one of the great battles of WW2, as surgeon on a Naval cruiser on the North Atlantic
.
A throwaway remark from a fellow crew member starts a chain of events that will change his life for ever.

Gradually their lives become more intertwined, but Jack’s defences take longer to crumble. An impulsive decision which saves his friend’s life forces him to face the truth. When he is in turn rescued from near certain death, it seems that their fates are now linked for good, despite the suspicion of Jack’s fellow officers, and the hostility of his family.

Ten years later, we find them lovers sharing an apparently enviable life. But behind this idyll new threats are looming. Will they escape or overcome them, or will they be destroyed?

Whether against the terrible beauty of the North Atlantic, or the more insidious poetry of 1950s suburban England, this is a story of the quest for love, and the fight to defend it.

I have removed the last five chapters. For further enquiries please email me. The final chapter is a synopsis.

The real strength of this book is the ability to summon up a mood an atmosphere, which (to my eyes, here) comes to mean much more than the usual vagaries of character and plot. You seem to be able to paint tableaus and vignettes quite effortlessly, as in “A full moon hung above the river valley... view book

The first two chapters convince ne that you are a writer with considerable powers. I especially appreciated Ch 2 with its sense of place on the Connaught coast. The prose is often wonderfully lyrical, as in the chapter beginning “I revelled in the bleakness that first winter…” The opening also s... view book

First – apologies for taking so long to review this. I have been off the site for almost 3 months – for various reasons. I wanted to make amends before the year’s end, especially as you are in the top 7. Globally I feel that this is a good introductory chapter. We quickly get some kind of sense of ... view book

Good dramatic beginning, though I would like to see a little bit more explanation as to why the man is so involved with Biotech securities, without getting into too much detail. Written in a pacey, straightforward, readable style. A few Americanisms that jarred slightly in a British setting, e... view book

I have read the first three chapters. You make it clear from the first line that this is a no-nonsense action thriller, written in a suitably energetic and informal style. The emphasis is on drama and suspense and strong emotions. There are few shades of grey, but that is probably appropriate. I ... view book
