about me

I write historical and literary fiction set in the 1800's. "Daniel's Garden", my debut Civil War novel, is currently for sale in bookstores throughout New England. You can also read it for free here! "The Heart of a Lie," set in 1868, is my newest and I'm finishing it up before publishing. Take a look at it here and please leave honest feedback.

I live in Portland, Maine, where I drink a lot of coffee, wander around antique authors' homes, give historical tours, and hang out with my hubby and pug. I joke that I was born in the wrong century, but then I couldn't have enjoyed the great literature produced in the 21st, right? :)

favourite books

Classics like Jane Eyre, Jane Austen, Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, great children's books like the Oz series and Alice in Wonderland. For modern books, I'm all over the map, enjoying everything from Harry Potter to Stieg Larsson to Stephen King to Tracy Chevalier. I'll read any genre - I'm just looking for great writing. :)

The Heart of a Lie

Meg North

Set in 1868 Maine, "The Heart of a Lie" is a New England Gothic story about a young woman discovering her past's heartbreaking secrets.

If you love women's literature classics like "Sense and Sensibility" or "Little Women," then enjoy my story about two sisters who discover long-buried truths about their secretive family.

All Esther Perry wants is to become the owner of her family farm in Bayview, Maine. Her mother is very ill, so Esther takes care of her and her younger sister, Lara. Their father was killed in the Civil War three years earlier. Upon her mother's death, Esther discovers the farm is $40,000 in debt and she is forced to sell it to her greedy neighbor.

Suddenly, a mysterious aunt shows up on their doorstep with an incredible offer. Esther and Lara journey to Portland and to a new world in the city. They meet kind cousin Elliot and nasty cousin Jane, wonder about a secret locked bedroom, encounter their brooding uncle and become acquainted with the wealthy Vallencourts.

But all is not as it seems, and Esther’s true past comes to light amidst the lies deeply entrenched in the hearts of her new family.

As of November 2011, still editing chapters. Am uploading them as they are finished.

Daniel's Garden

Meg North

Dramatic and epic, "Daniel's Garden" is an adventurous coming-of-age story about an unlikely soldier.

Wealthy Daniel Stuart's destiny lies along an educated path. But he shocks his Boston family by dropping out of Harvard to join a ragtag group of abolitionists - and they go to war.

Follow Daniel and his comrades - brash Andrew, studious Matthew, and gentle David - into the trenches and fields of some of the Civil War's bloodiest battles: Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.

This story will astound you with its graphic depictions of battles, its memoir-esque feel, and its tender love story. Funny, poignant, and heartbreaking, "Daniel's Garden" depicts the sacrifices one man will make to be true to himself.

Hi Jori, thank you so much for backing my story "The Heart of a Lie." I read your opening introduction, chapter list and the first chapter of this thought-provoking work. I am very old-fashioned as a modern woman, for I created a character, Esther Perry, in my own story who wants the traditional hom... view book

Hi Bradley, You have something quite special here. I haven't read such an intriguing premise for a novel in a long time, not just here but in bookstores, too. It instantly piqued my interest. And, you have the writing skills to back up your incredible idea. This was a pleasure to read, since you br... view book

Hi Ashley, This is sweet and fun and actually reminds me of the opening to a children's fantasy story I wrote when I was about 12. It was also set in a principal's office where weird things were happening to a little girl and she had to be sent home. It's a great opening to setting up the fantasti... view book

My goodness, Audrey, I love this. I laughed out loud at "Homogenous High." Except for the year, this could have been my highschool experience since I moved around a lot. Wow, it did bring back memories. And I love your Grammar Hag alter-ego. I actually came to comment here since you nailed my exact ... view book

Hi Areeq, I read your first chapter and thought both your short and long descriptions of the novel were brilliant. You have a fascinating concept that is hot, hip and right-now for the Internet generation who barely know life before it and certainly don't know what to do without it. However, with su... view book
