about me

I’m a South African novelist, scriptwriter and sometime journalist.

I’m the author of Moxyland (currently tied into a kick-ass short story competition - click on the book for more) and a rollicking pop-history, Maverick: Extraordinary Women From South Africa’s Past.

I’ve also published short stories in several anthologies, including most recently, Touch: Stories of Contact, a collection by some of South Africa’s most interesting writers .

In my day job, I’m the headwriter at TV studio Clockwork Zoo where I get to work on writing cartoons and movie scripts with an amazingly talented and crazy bunch of people.

I have my MA in creative writing, but I really learned to write in 12 years of journalism, tackling everything from township vigilantes to trendoid swingers for the likes of Colors, The Hollywood Reporter, Marie Claire and The Sunday Times.

My new novel, Zoo City, a muti noir set in Johannesburg is due out with Angry Robot in 2010.

"A technicolor, jazzy, rollercoaster ride into a dazzling hell. Like Clockwork Orange, this book has the makings of a cult success"

What’s really going on?

Who’s really in charge?

You have NO. FUCKING. IDEA.

Moxyland kicks the door in on the techno-corporate conspiracy that's out to get us... and our freedom.

In the near future, an art-school dropout, an AIDSbaby, a tech-activist and a RPG-obsessed blogger live in a world where your online identity is at least as important as your physical one. Getting disconnected is a punishment worse than imprisonment, but someone’s got to stand up to government inc., whatever the cost.

At authonomy we're partnering up with SF/F imprint Angry Robot and Lauren to offer you the chance to have a short story published in Lauren's next book. Your story must include characters, settings, themes or ideas from Moxyland and should be around 3000 words long. To enter, copy and paste your story into the comments section beneath the book. Lauren will be picking her 3 favourites, all of which will be published in the back of her new novel, out next May.

By entering this competition you must agree to the full terms and conditions: to read these, copy the link below into your browser.

ANNOUNCING THE SHORT-LIST (Winners announcement Tuesday) Judging the Moxyland short story competition has been hellish. It started off well enough, getting to read 52 stories and pretending like it was work? Especially when those stories had DNA in common with Moxyland and all the things ... view book

Thanks Hawkmoon1952, that's fantastic. It's always gratifying (and humbling) when someone connects with the book. If you do happen to enter this competition, would you mind doing it under a different user name so I'm not unduly and unfairly influenced by your heady praise going to, well, my head... view book
