Child Pretending

Sheila Bugler

Desperate to uncover the truth about her husband’s murder, DI Maeve Mahoney becomes embroiled in a terrifying cat and mouse chase with the killer

Lewisham, South-East London. A young woman’s body is found in a quiet laneway. She’s been run over. Deliberately.

For DI Maeve Mahoney, it’s going to be a tough case. For one thing, the hit and run eerily mirrors the recent, unsolved murder of Maeve’s husband. Then there’s victim herself. It seems the killer got the wrong girl. And the intended victim, Katie Hope, has disappeared with her young son.

As Maeve races to find Katie, she realises she's not the only one. Local loan shark Billy Dunston has his own reasons for wanting Katie out of the way and nothing's going to stop him.

As Maeve pursues Dunston with relentless determination, she is blind to the fact that he’s not her only problem. Someone close to her is trying to destroy her. Every step closer to Dunston is a step closer to her life being ripped apart. If she’s not careful, her job, her family and everything she’s ever cared about will be lost forever.

LONGLISTED for two novel competitions at the moment. Now waiting to hear if it's been shortlisted.

Huge thanks to the fabulous Bradley Wind for the gorgeous book cover.

Okay. I've read the first three chapters. Love this Douglas. You set up the story so well; this is a real page-turner. The writing, like the plot, is very tight. Love the way it's broken into Now, Then, Before sections. Believable dialogue, great characterisation - what's not to like? Oh, I did spo... view book

Can I make a minor suggestion before I get stuck in? Your pitch would read so much better if you added a comma after 'As his profile grows' view book

excellent. read more chapters today. Alison, this is a great read. A tight plot along with really well-written characters. Nothing to add, really, except that I love this. Sheila view book

Hi Alison dipping in and will be back later with more comments. A great pitch although I stumbled over the para beginning, 'When the dead girls' lover...' the whole sentence is too long and I had to read several times before I realised what you were saying. The punctuation made me think there was a... view book
