about me

I am a writer and photographer from North Wales - also a self-confessed Star Trek fan (and fan fiction writer), Old English addict, and armchair archaeologist. I read widely, and write fiction for adults and young adults. My one published novel - How Glass Becomes Sand (as A. L. Doughty) - is not aimed at children.

Willing to swap reads for those who look at Of The Ninth Verse. I welcome all comments.

People calling me A.L. You don't address people by their initials! I mean, why would you?
People calling me Ann, Anne or Annie. That's not my name.
Messages demanding I read a book. There's no reason not to ask politely.
People commenting on my book to tell me they've backed/starred it. Please, if you comment, say something about the book, not just that you've backed it or that you want me to look at your book!

The Myth of Wings

A. L. Reynolds

Cassandra, an artist from England. Ed, an American WWII veteran. Both find themselves together in the afterlife. It is up to Cassie to discover why.

Yesterday it began. Yesterday was the falling through the sky and then the ground below, deadly and level and made of earth and grass. The noise was a thrumming, a taut noise of hard air striking and shivering past wings that would no longer fly. It was a scream that had no lungs to pant and make it stop. The men in the aircraft were beyond screaming. They were focussed on pulling up, pulling up, trying to make it so that the aircraft touched the ground more softly than a spear.

Of The Ninth Verse

A L Reynolds

Anwen and Idwal are just two people who fall in love - except that Anwen is Idwal's sister...

Inspired by a true story, Of The Ninth Verse is a love story set in the Welsh hills. When Idwal is born Anwen sees him as an interloper in her contented childhood. But as the pair grow older, they also grow closer. Anwen is Idwal's protector, his guide and his idol - later she will become his lover.

A small glossary - Taid (pronounced 'tide') = Grandfather
Nain (pronounced 'nine') = Grandmother

Written for Nanowrimo ( http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/664738 ), this is now complete, but not all uploaded.

Abigail Swanhard has extraordinary powers in a world where magic is taboo- but her ability to manipulate the elements will save more than just herself....

Living on a farm in a Victorian-era alternate reality, Abigail Swanhard knows she is talented with magic, but little more than that. Her brother Tom isn’t talented with much of anything – but they are happy enough, until Tom is mistakenly identified as special, and as a result their father is murdered and the family is torn apart.

Unable to be supported at home, Abigail is sent to a convent, while it is up to Tom and his mother to keep the struggling farm alive. But fate is drawing them back together again, this time on different sides of the fight between the Church, and the magic it has condemned as evil.

Angelwings is complete, and a sequel is in progress.

A fascinating concept for a book. I was afraid this was going to be another special-academy-for-people-with-special-powers book, but it certainly stands out. The image of Marna's singing bursting out of her, the catastrophic results and the shattering glass at her shout was beautifully visual and so... view book

Little bits of this shine out as beautiful - the mother's sentiment that every fish she gutted was special because it might have been caught by her husband, and Snorri's observations on the sight of aeroplanes and the lighthouse shining out across the sea and land. It's a great idea for a story, and... view book

I enjoyed reading this from start to finish. Some bits reminded me of growing up with goats, so it touched a spot of nostalgia in me – but the exotic setting and descriptions were a wonderful taste of another life. I think this book would do very well for children of around age 6 to early teens. ... view book

I read through two chapters of this without stopping. As a mother of a three-year-old it was very interesting reading about your difficulties with an adopted child of a similar age (it puts some of his behaviour into perspective!). It's also very interesting and illuminating about the adoption proce... view book

I read the first few chapters of this and enjoyed them immensely. Your trio of heroes are endlessly amusing and engaging. I did wonder occasionally about the Young Adult tag, however. I could imagine this being more enjoyable for adults who have grown up reading Jennings and Just William and want a ... view book
