about me

I've worked hard all my life, very hard, physical work but while I was working, I was dreaming, conjuring scenes that entwined my experiences with my imagination and from it came stories, vivid stories of heartache, joy, adventure and ultimately inner peace. Now semi retired I can get all my thoughts and the pictures in my mind down in print. My first book "2012: When the Earth Moved" is here for all to see. Others are flowing swiftly from my keyboard. If you choose to do so, what you'll read is a piece of me, grafted onto the lives of others. They live the dreams I had and I hope so will you.

1850: Decision Time

Sandy McKay

The McDonalds are robbed of loved ones by the fever. The Highland Clearance is in full swing. Can they survive as a family?

Neil McDonald is desperately worried about his family. Can he control the mutinous young man who is his eldest son? Will he be able to hold the family together. It's his greatest test since he lost his wife ten years ago. Then his own wild temper leads him into an act of fury that greatly reduces his options.

The Journey

Sandy McKay

This is the second book in the Far Flung Scots series.
It follows the McDonalds and their friends as they sail to Australia.

The year is 1851 and Neil Mcdonald takes his family aboard the sailing ship Alexander the Great for the epic voyage to Port Philip near Melbourne, Australia. There are around seven hundred other people aboard and they all have a story to tell.
This book charts the adventures and problems of a few of them as they travel across the oceans, sometimes becalmed sometimes in storms but always in danger.
Fist fights, dog fights, gambling and carousing are all part and parcel of their daily existence. On top of all that the captain is an ambitious bully who wants to break the record for the journey time between the old world and the new.
Will he succeed and how many of his passengers will survive to tell the tale?

2012: When The Earth Moved

Sandy McKay

In 2012 as America struggles to recover from natural disaster dark forces take advantage of her plight and humanity plunges to the brink of extinction.

New Zealand born farmer’s son Callum McDonald wants to see the world and in particular, Scotland, the land of his forefathers. Using his skills he joins a band of sheep shearers making their way from Wales through England and into Scotland, drawn irrevocably towards his destiny on Mull.

Here he encounters the beautiful Joanne who has returned to her roots and after an inauspicious start, they fall in love. Love doesn’t run smoothly but after much personal tragedy they find themselves facing the future together on the beautiful island of Mull which has survived the cataclysmic events that reshaped the world in 2012 and 2013.

Meanwhile, a soulless dictator from across the world and a brutal arms dealer steal an atomic submarine planning to take it across the Atlantic to cripple America, already reeling from recent events.

As events unfold, the forces of good and evil converge on Mull and Callum is called on to play his part.

Will this simple farmer find the courage to fight for survival?

Callum digs deep but can he pull the trigger when the chips are down and a familiar face is at the other end of the gun barrel?

Hi Emma, Your first chapter is so gripping and the character of Joseph so terrible that it is a relief when the voice comes in at the end to stop the torture. I found myself rushing on to the second and then the third without a pause. Your writing is gripping and the drawing of the characters is fau... view book

Hi Jane. Thank you for you frank and helpful comments. I appear to start my books too slowly and it is something I must try to address. Since Decision Time I have completed another book which follows the family on their journey to Australia. In those days the journey was around three months and ther... view book

Thank you for your kind comments. I hope you will enjoy the rest of the book when you get time to read it. I have written two more books and have started a third which gives an account of the journey the young man Callum's ancestors would have undertaken to get to New Zealand in the 1850's.I plan to... view book
