about me

I'm a new writer, and my only claim to fame is that many years ago I wrote a screen-play which was almost accepted by a TV company. It was not to be, so unfortunately I didn't give up the day job.

Whilst working overseas in West Africa I decided to have another go, but this time a novel. There wasn't a lot to do in the evenings in places like Sierra Leone and Cote D'Ivoire , so I wrote a detective thriller based in my home town of Bournemouth. Writing about familiar surroundings cured me of home-sickness, and this first story turned into '24 Hours From Tulse Hill'.

I enjoyed writing it so much I followed it up last September with the stand-alone sequel, 'Cold Hearts and Candy Floss'. I liked spending more time with these characters, and escaping the real world again for a while is always a bonus.

I've also put two plays on here, plus another novel under a different pen name. All three are comedies, and they're all different from each other. I'd love to see the plays performed on stage, but winning the lottery is probably far easier than getting published these days.

Everyone seems to enjoy my stuff, so have a read of the pitches and see if you can find something to keep you entertained.

favourite books

I quite like Edgar Wallace, Anthony Trollope, Alan Bennett and some Dickens.

24 Hours From Tulse Hill

Fran Hiatt

Can a washed-up detective recover from a bullet-shattered hip, damaged reputation, broken heart and impending mid-life crisis? Does Bournemouth hold the answer?

Rob Trent is frightened, insecure, intolerant, vulnerable and a bit of a drama queen; just normal then for a bloke pushing forty. Parting from his soul mate Sarah makes life unbearable for Trent, as well as for the people who have to work with him in New Scotland Yard's Bloc-Busters squad. Self-pity leads to neglect of himself and his work, and he is shot during a raid on a gang of human traffickers.

Convalescing in his home town of Bournemouth, he tries to rid himself of his demons as well as his crutches. The local CID boss thinks Trent's salvation will come through helping his own depleted squad. Reluctantly Trent agrees and is soon investigating the murders of an ABBA tribute band musician, two young women, a B&B landlady, the suicide of a model from the archives and human remains found at her stately home.

His multi-tasking malaise isn't helped by a middle-aged Detective Constable trying to re-invent himself, a policewoman who thinks he's Mr Right and a ne'er-do-well Detective Inspector convinced that Trent is agent provocateur. To solve anything Trent needs more bodies, but he just keeps finding dead ones.

Can a budget UK perfume manufacturer compete against designer fragrances? Will they create a stink or be shown the Dior? Will common scents prevail?

Sir Henry Spice is planning his retirement and wants to groom his inexperienced nephews to take over the reins of Spice of Life Perfumes and Cosmetics. The company's usual products are cheap fragrances like 'Lavender Hill - Fight off the Mob', which small children buy as Christmas presents for their grandmothers out of their pocket money .

Before he hangs up his carnation extractor for good however, Spice wants one last attempt at showing the designer perfume brands what he's capable of. He develops a potentially world beating fragrance and cosmetics range called 'Ulaya - Goddess of Eternal Youth', and entrusts the boys to run the launch campaign . His trust may have been misplaced, and old Spice starts to have second thoughts, "because you're worthless".

This is a traditional comedy play originally designed for radio, but it might also work as a stage play; End of the Pier Theatre perhaps?

Measuring For Curtains

Fran Hiatt

In a depressed housing market, once you find a buyer you need to keep him. Even if he's lying dead on your dining room floor.

In the depths of the UK housing market slump, Paul Verwood has waited two years to find a buyer for his bungalow. In desperation, he accepts a low offer from a middle aged man relocating to the Dorset area with his beautiful young bride. Paul looks forward to moving out, to fulfil his dream of travelling around Western Europe in his new luxury motorhome.

On the day before completion, the buyers call round to measure for curtains and the husband drops dead. The grieving young widow is still keen to own her dream home, and Paul is very anxious for her to have it. Do they call an ambulance, or just hide the body until the house purchase goes through?

Cold Hearts and Candy Floss

Stand-alone sequel to '24 Hours From Tulse Hill', in which Rob Trent attempts to turn the tide of serious crime at the seaside.

After vicious muggers are murdered, police fear that a vigilante may be interpreting the Criminal Justice Act in his own unique way. Can Trent bring him to book, or will he disappear off the page into the annals of Bournemouth folklore?

An Ordnance Survey map on a website points police to the graves of several young women, missing since the 1970s. Do they have the geo-spatial awareness to seek out the source, or just wait patiently for more X’s to mark the spot?

Disgraced MP Augustus Tremayne reports his wife missing, but will police get his vote when it comes to finding her? His concerns seem almost too genuine, as if he’s trying to disguise a motive for her murder.

When a surfer resorts to burglary to fund repairs to his VW splitscreen bus he discovers that life's not always a beach, it can be a bitch as well.

With his girlfriend gone, Trent wants to be left alone. Ros Marnie is determined to fill the gap in his life again, especially now she’s working alongside him in CID. Can Wyn James come to his rescue by falling in love with her?

Thanks Kim. I would also like to see it on stage, but I've had no success getting anyone interested. I suppose it's even even harder to get a play read than a novel. Literary agents always seem too busy, and you wonder what with? I went into Waterstones last week and 80% of its featured book... view book

Excellent advice. Editing is quite a chore but a necessary one.Although writers hate cutting out what they think are good words that the story needs, losing the dross improves the reading experience. Thanks view book

Excellent read, and a difficult subject to convey. It's been done in a such a brilliant way that doesn't make the reader feel sorry for the individual, but it soes give them a better understanding of how life can be when you're dealt a lousy hand. It's very entertaining to read, and I know that thi... view book
