about me

I'm a doctoral student working on my Ph.D. in Computer Science who loves to read and write primarily in Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I've written three novel length books over the last three years and have several others in production. The vast, vast majority of my time is spent with algorithms and code, but when I do find a spare moment (or absolutely cannot go to sleep without doing something for a few minutes that doesn't involve math or programming), I love taking a trip to someone else's world or spending some time in my own creations.

I hope that maybe my creations are interesting to others. That's not why I write them, but it sure would make me feel good if someone enjoys them. If you do, I'd love to hear what you think.

A Freak's Life

Dennis Lingerfelt

Brennen's life seems charmed – attractive, athletic, rich, intriguing – the whole package, but Brennen has a secret. Brennen Tyler is a monster.

After the untimely accidental death of his parents, the infant Brennen Tyler goes to live with his kind if distant grandfather, Dr. Earnest James, at his estate in fictional Ash County, CT. Dr. James, a brilliant scientist and wealthy entrepreneur, and his grandson live a rather mundane life for thirteen years, but when adolescence strikes Brennen, something really changes.

Puberty is hard for everyone – hair growing in new and strange places, growth spurts that render favorite clothes useful only as rags overnight, deepening voice, changing urges, terrifying skin, and, of course, the hormones. For Brennen, though, his journey to manhood seems to have brought on a strange new affliction. With a mathematical, almost surgically clean precision, every twenty-nine days, Brennen Tyler becomes a monster.

Worse still, the monster that comes so very regularly seems to be coming more often, and Brennen finds himself wondering if one day soon, he will disappear forever leaving only the beast behind.

Intended for older Young Adult (or young at heart adults) -- speculative/science-fiction teen drama. Book 1 of The Brennenite Chronicles.

Ariom, Yep, you are spot on on all your criticisms. All your suggestions are areas I'm not great. If you think the point of view switching is bad now, you should have read the first draft. I believe that my friend's official verdict when she proofed it involved the word schitzophrenic. App... view book

Burgio, Thanks for the support and suggestions. I wasn't even aware that there was a political/social connotation with the word freak. Haha, I guess that's what I get for trying to write below my age level! When I was in high school (long long ago, in a galaxy, erm, sorry) that's what my lit... view book

Andrew, Thank you! I appreciate your support and kind words. I love the title of your book by the way. I'm adding it to my list of "way too many books to read and way too little time." I appreciate it! Dennis view book

Susie, Thank you! I appreciate your kind words and you backing my book. I've pulled up your memoirs, added to my watchlist, and will definitely be giving them a look. I've only been on the site for two days, so I have LOTS of reading to do (HOORAY!). I just started Craig's book (The Sun and ... view book
