about me

I write primarily romantic fantasy stories. I have a core philosophy about my writing: to shamelessly quote Ron Moore, "It's the characters, stupid." If you have a strong enough cast of characters put into an interesting situation, the plot will, for the most part, write itself.

Also, I have something of a grudge against those who indiscriminately demand that all adverbs be removed from a manuscript. While it is possible to overuse them, and many amateur writers do so, that does not mean they should be denied a place in literature altogether, as so many critics suggest. I believe the adverb has received much more disdain and scorn than it deserves. There is nothing wrong with using them to add color and detail to descriptive passages, so long as they are not used to excess (i.e., as a crutch to prop up otherwise weak prose). So fair warning to all you adverb obsessed critics: prepare to be ignored. :)

To those of you currently on my watch list or waiting for a read swap, my sincerest apologies. I've had a lot going on in the offline world that's kept me away from Authonmy more than I would like. I'm currently at least a week behind, but will try to get to responses, reads and comments as soon as possible. For those who are close to making the Editor's Desk this month, drop me a line and I will put you at the top of the heap so I can get to you before month's end.

Siren

Sydney Isle

What if you woke up one day and discovered you were a monster -- a mass-murdering, inexplicable killing machine?

What would you do if you discovered one day that you had the power to lay waste to every living person in a room without even knowing you were doing it?

Jen has been raised in an ordinary, suburban neighborhood, with the understanding that magick and the supernatural do not exist. Despite her inclination toward flights of fancy, she accepts this preconception until events force her to open her eyes and see what she has always told herself was not there. Her love of music has led her to discover a power not seen since ancient times - the voice of a Siren -- in the worst possible way anyone could discover such a thing about themselves.

Now, Jen must claim the abilities she has denied for so long in order to defeat the demons threatening to destroy the world around her - most notable among them, the ones within herself.

Janvier, I have to agree with the rest of the comments I see on this book. It needs to be on bookshelves NOW, with a script FedEx overnighted to Hollywood post haste. Just don't let the suits screw it up. It's as close to a perfect international thriller as I've seen in ages. On my shelf. ... view book

Sheryl, This is sheer genius! Most vigilante avenger stories clearly choose one side or the other -- either the vigilantes are lauded as anti-heroes, or derided as villains in their own right. You've mastered the rare and difficult task of walking the line where everyone is a real, "equally pro... view book

Reading this HC review on one of the finest books I have read on this site makes me reconsider whether or not it's worth the trouble of getting to the editors' desk at all. If the editors can't even get the gender of your MC correct, how can they be expected to write a competent review of the work?... view book

Michael, First, let me say that this story is very well-written. The opening drew me in despite the fact that the genre is about as far from my normal fare as possible. That said, I had some trouble staying involved after that first chapter, probably because it is so far from my normal turf. D... view book

Matt, I absolutely LOVE this book. The premise alone is stellar, and it is one you have executed with the skill of a master. I can't think of a single bad thing to say, even a constructive critique. Shelved. Thanks, Sydney view book
