about me

I have had an unremarkable journey through life (so far): a conventional progression from a happy childhood, some interesting pets, great parents, to marriage, arrival of a son and a daughter (in the picture and of whom I am immensely proud and whom I consider my greatest blessing), a long series of merely functional jobs, and a divorce.

I know very well the world can be a grim place, but increasingly I've just not been able to take life too seriously. The human condition is inescapably absurd.

‘Awfully English' is my first full length novel: it is best described as a satirical Aga saga, I think. I have also written an array of short pieces, all in a similarly wry style, and am currently working on a sequel.

favourite books

Titles by Tom Sharpe, Stephen Fry (The Liar and Hippopotamus in particular) to begin with. Winnie the Pooh, a lot of Spike Milligan's work, Jonathan Meades 'The Fowler Family Business', all Bill Bryson's work, R F Delderfield, Fay Weldon's earlier work, Mary Wesley's Chamomile Lawn, Laurie Lee - Cider with Rosie and As I Walked out One Summer Morning

Awfully English

Faith Bretherick

A wry contemporary tale concerning the inhabitants of Hake on Spinach and surrounding villages and their lives, loves and misdemeanours

Hake on Spinach is an achingly traditional English village, replete with colourful characters and possibilities.

Helena Ruby Tremble, housekeeper of Hake Hall, is trapped in an unhappy marriage, but despite several disappointments, she may find love and fulfilment in an unlikely quarter.

Things unravel for Nigel and Isobel Lamington-Krill, occupants of the Hall, as one by one Nigel's dishonest chickens come home to roost, and matters take a further downwards turn following a raid by anti-hunt protestors during one of Isobel's grand parties.

Along the way you will become party to the concerns and peccadillos of ladies who lunch, and you will also learn Ronald Arthur Tremble's dark secret.

So why not join Helena Ruby, the Lamington-Krills and a host of other characters for a humorous romp around a leafy English county, and while you're there, call in to the Raddled Beanpole for a refreshing pint of local ale? I recommend the Roach Royal Ruby.

Having just finished chapter 7, this can truly be described as gruesomely fascinating. I have to admit to not really wanting to go past chapter 1 as depictions of violence against children really repel me, but, self evidently, I have been drawn in by the plot and razor-sharp quality of your writing... view book

This is skilfully written in an easy-reading style, which I think is pitched just right for a youthful audience. The pace is well moderated and how could anybody not have some empathy with the four-legged protagonists! I'm happy to back this. view book

I'm not familiar with this genre, so I can only offer you my overall impression, but I hope it is of some value. Having read to the end of ch 2, I feel your narrative could be pared down somewhat, and a fair few adjectives dispensed with. The nature of a thriller suggests a sparser approach to m... view book

This is razor-sharp writing and a piercing insight into Gerard's struggle with his inner demons and his efforts to keep them at bay. The way you build Ruth's character is totally convincing, and your writing style is faultless. What has stayed in my mind is your reference to the 'parboiled skin' o... view book

I congratulate you on polished writing which is very easy to read. You conjure up engaging characters which doesn't always happen with fantasy tales, in my fairly limited experience, and your opening is paced sufficiently to draw the reader in and provide sufficient information to intrigue without... view book
