about me

I've always wanted to be a writer, but it took me a while to figure out that I actually needed to write, instead of thinking about writing, for that to happen. But I've been writing regularly for about fifteen years now, and I've been an active game writer for almost ten years, publishing four novels and over a dozen short stories in various science-fiction and fantasy game series. I've also published an original short story called "Kings Do Not Die, They Only Disappear," and the novel I have live on this site shares the setting of that story. Along with working on my own writing, I've taught a few writing classes, which is a lot of fun. I'm a Chicagoan and a lifelong Cubs fan, which is why the occasional futility of being a writer doesn't bother me much--however bad it may be for me, it's been worse for my team.

REVIEWING POLICY: I'm happy to exchange reviews, but I'm a fairly strict reviewer. I only back books that I feel are ready or nearly ready for publication. I will always be encouraging even when I find what I think are problems, and I will do my best to make helpful, specific comments.

The Last Prophecies of Harrima....

Jason M. Hardy

In a world altered by new magic, an outlawed church and a powerful nation clash, pushing a young priest's faith to the breaking point.

The time for an outlawed church’s triumph has come. Lloyd Hsu lives on a transformed Long Island, which has been devastated by magic powers unleashed on the world in the past seventy years. Hsu and his fellow adepts have clung to prophecies of their church’s founder, Harriman Ellis, telling of a chosen one who will lead them to victory over the neighboring nation that has long oppressed them. After years of anticipation, the prophecies are being fulfilled. The church rushes toward conflict, but Hsu is not ready for what the battle brings. He must question everything he once believed and attempt to rebuild his life when the core of his faith collapses.

A fast-moving fantasy novel set in a near-future North America altered by magic, "The Last Prophecies of Harriman Ellis" examines the persistence of faith and the stubborn desire to believe in times of disaster. Revealing a new world where the two largest organizations of wizards in the world fight for control and the loyalty of their people, the book tells of church members, resistance fighters, and a man older than the church who join Hsu’s fight to build something new in the middle of destruction.

I enjoyed the build-up to the concert—I liked your descriptions of the crowd, and the conversations between Taylor and Emma had the right kind of giddy feeling to it—with a little hint that they were somewhat embarrassed to be feeling giddy. I think their relationship feels right, and that will help... view book

You write quite well and produced a very strong beginning. The prologue is a grabber, and the following chapter serves as an interesting contrast as we see the gap between what Amber was and what she becomes. The use of the present tense in the prologue is nice, as it gives immediacy to that section... view book

This is going to be tough--I am very picky about books to back, and you're right on the border! Mostly that's because of a number of things you do well. I enjoyed the "Layman's Guide to Magic" excerpts at the beginning of each chapter (though the style of these may need to become more varied as the ... view book

Very creative and energetic! The opening scene does a very nice job establishing Cuthbert's character, and there are many nice turns of phrase and imaginative descriptions as the story moves along. I enjoy stories set in among small groups of people where everyone is a bit nuts, and this is a nice e... view book

I like the shadow world you have set up, especially Porter’s thoughts in chapter 1 on the secret meanings of seemingly random acts. The opens up an interesting area for exploration, and subsequent chapters show that this world will be looked at in nice detail, which should be fun! In order to bri... view book
