Underwood

Michael Stone

A romance novel that focuses on the man's feelings, his struggles to overcome his inner conflicts or face losing the woman he loves.

Jacob Underwood and Elsbeth Covington, both living by old-fashioned values while trying to incorporate modern-day attitudes, meet and fall in love in the wake of the death of Elsbeth's grandmother, who was also Jacob's client. In the settling of the estate, Elsbeth invites Jacob, a rare book dealer, to appraise her grandmother's library. Their common interests in fine literature and poetry bring them closer together. The story revolves around their romance, but the focus is on Jacob as he struggles to resolve his inner conflicts, confront Elsbeth’s domineering step-brother, Marcus, who believes that Elsbeth has inherited some secret wealth and that Jacob is out to steal it, and a third obstacle to their happiness which has Jacob in a turmoil as he attempts to reconcile his own dreams with those of Elsbeth’s.

I read nine chapters. It was tempting to read more, but I didn't want to get engrossed. Your pace and atmosphere are suspenseful and informative. Chapter one shows the effect, and then relates the cause. Everything the reader needs to know to understand what's going on and how important it all is. ... view book

I read the first six chapters, and I'm sorely tempted to read on. Though books about serial killers fall outside my preference, your story contains so much characterization and hard life imagery that it could also be called literary fiction. Chapter one begins with an amusing observation on the dire... view book

A unique twist on the crime novel/murder mystery. A mystery within a mystery. Who killed Troy's mother? Who was killing people Troy hates? If Troy's the killer, then what's the connection to his mother's murder? Separated by an ocean, the investigator and the victim both cope with revelations about ... view book

A good start with the truth about Jack's motivation to play the game. Funny. Although I'm not a big sports fan, there's enough non-sports material to appeal to any reader. Jack seems to be the proverbial guy at the tail-end of a dream come true. So many stories are written about dreams coming true, ... view book

Charming story. The Berenstain Bears mixed with eerie fantasy, small town romance and drama. Beautifully descriptive and characterized, the town comes to life as if the book were illustrated. The idea of a bear and a beaver in a relationship makes one wonder about the mechanics of intimacy, but sinc... view book
