about me

My birth name is Daniel Enrique Escurel Occeno. I live in Gubat, Philippines. I was born on June 15, 1960 in Sorsogon City, Philippines.

I lived in the United States for 36 years and I returned to my birth country on December 2, 2004.

I write stories for children to encourage children to read, and I enjoy writing the stories.

I am a novelist with a pen name, Enrique Gubat. I write novels to someday have a source of income in my old age.

You can read one of my novels “LEE CHON – The Advocate of the Point Guard”. It is entered in www.textnovel.com writing contest.

In the TEXTNOVEL website simply type in “Lee Chon” in the textbox search engine in the upper right hand corner instead of “Enter Keyword/s”.

I also write articles suggesting how I would end the poverty in the Philippines submitted to newspapers in print and to publications on the Internet.

I believe the Philippines can have the economy to be a G20 Country in less than five years, but I am only a writer. Our business leaders and educators and politicians will have to make it happen.

Inspirations:
--- Stan Lee writer of Marvel Comics – “Fantastic Four”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Tales to Astonish”, “Thor”, “Journey into Mystery”, “The Avengers”, “(Uncanny) X-Men”, “Captain America”, “Tales of Suspense”, and “Daredevil”. I could not draw lifelike cartoons because I have childhood allergic arthritis, but I grew up wanting to write novels of super heroes.
--- Stephen J. Cannel writer of TV action dramas: “Hunter” and “Stingray”. The TV Shows inspired me to write detective mysteries and action drama novels and write for TV.
--- Neil Simon writer of screen plays - “Barefoot in the Park” - (Screenplay 1963 and Film 1967)
“The Goodbye Girl” - (Screenplay and Film 1977)
--- “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was loosely based on a novella of the same name by Truman Capote. (Novella 1958 and Film 1961)
--- “A Sunday in New York”, the screenplay (1963) was written Norman Krasna. The Film was 1963.

I never read the novella or screenplays but seeing the movie on TV as a grade school student along with the movie “The Goodbye Girl” as a high school student was the inspiration to write simple romance novels and maybe even screenplays. I still enjoy watching reruns of the movies.

Favorite books

Marvel Comic Books. They really are my favorites, still. What more with the success of the “big screen” movie version. “Nuff said,” said Stan Lee.

Rock and Pop at the Philippine....

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

The music industry at the Philippines has a new competitor, Virginia “Virgi” Qurel. She was determined to make it big someday, as the owner.

[Novella with screenplay] The daughter of wealthy Filipino-American parents, living at Minneapolis, Minnesota; her father wanted her studying at the best medical school in all of Asia. After dropping out, she decided to live in Sorsogon City at the property of her parents. She joined a local talent contest; she won so she decided to be a professional singer, singing at clubs and dives and hotel restaurants, until one day she was able to spend her trust fund at age twenty-five. She started her own music company to promote her CD music. Her boyfriend, Felix, was against the idea. He wanted Virgi finishing her medical degree so they can have their own medical clinic someday. Virgi reminded Felix that he could not even pass his license to private practice and he will be forever working as an intern and an ER residence at the province government hospital. Virgi struggled with no one wanting her CD so she devised a plan to find the Top 10 singers and bands to promote her new music company. The free concert was called “Rock and Pop at the Philippines”. The top ten participants were the potential artists for the company.

God in Heaven, Send Me an Ange....

Daniel Escurel Occeno

An Asian council wanted Enri Gabrielo president of the United States on 2016, but he had to be senator first; only death could stop it.

[Three books with a genre of political action thriller and with the backdrop of a political power struggle in electing an American president] The first of a possible trilogy, “God in Heaven, Send Me an Angel (Book One)”, is about a single native-born Filipino multi-millionaire being manipulated to run for senator of the State of Missouri. Wealthy and powerful Asian families wanted the first Asian-American president in the United States of America, but the chosen candidate had too many dots to connect and enemies wanted to terminate his chances. Enri had to win senator on 2012 and because born in the Philippine Island the constitution had to be ratified to allow naturalized American citizens could legally run for president on 2016. Could the powerful Asian families, first, manipulate Enri to run for senate on a federal level? The enemies of the Asian council were willing to send Enri to heaven. “God in Heaven, Send Me a Redeemer” (Book Two) and “JANO Project 2016” (Book Three). By 2016, the United States of America would need the investments of the wealthiest Asian families for the American lifestyle to continue economic supremacy - winner of JANO 2012 50K words in 31 days challenge.

Daughters of Pontus

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

A corrupt former American senator devised a plan to win the next presidential election in four years, a military coup takeover of the Philippine Islands.

(A Sleuths’ Ink JANO 2011 WINNER of 50K words in January 2011) Pontus Bao was trained by the intelligence network of the western allies to prevent any Communist dictator by means of a takeover of the Philippine Islands. The takeover never happened during the Cold War. Bao lived a simple life in the United States teaching International Studies and Politics until one day he was arrested as a terrorist. Pontus had no criminal record, not even a traffic ticket. He was set free by an embarrass administration. The incriminators decided to abduct Bao illegally in captivity because he could spoil the plans of a wealthy man trying to win the presidency in the next election. The plans had been in the works for ten years in a think tank and tremendous amount of money had been spent. When Bao did not log on to a website after seven days, E-mail alerts were sent to his three daughters residing in three different countries. The E-mail alerts were sent everyday until it received a response. It was a simple text. “Find Me, your father.” Angelica Bao lived in London, England. Bianca Bao lived in Manila, Philippines. Cai Bao lived in Beijing, China.

FAITH AND HOPE AND CHARITY

By Daniel Escurel Occeno

A NaNoWriMo 2011 WINNER of a Filipino married couple living in an apartment of a high-rise condominium at New York City became separated.

“Faith and Hope and Charity” is a mainstream romance novel about Angelo and Mia Sorgon and their teenage daughter Rachel. The idea is to capture the possible divorce or legal separation or annulment of whatever is legal in the Philippines because Angelo and Mia, both, want careers with different objectives.

Angelo wants to be super wealthy as Mia is simply working for a cause. The move (OFW) to be near the Statue of Liberty only caused the separation because Mia did not want to play housewife in Manhattan.

Mia decided to move back to her quietly little town to live a simple life because twin brothers from Norway hired her to do Marine Science research in the Philippines.

At the ending, I have to decide if it will be a mainstream novel or a mainstream romance novel.

At the end if the separation continues, then it will be a mainstream novel.

At the end if Angelo and Mia find their way back to being in love to live happily ever after for a lifetime, then it will be a mainstream romance novel.

Who will give up everything, for it to be a romance?

Radio Love

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

Anthony Daye had a radio love. Fe Pagasa was the lunch hour lady on-the-air “live” on the radio, but she was engaged to someone else.

Fe Pagasa was a successful baby model at Makati City, Philippines. Her parents moved her to New York City when she was only one years old. She became a successful cover model of international magazines and a runway model. She earned a radio broadcasting degree in college and at 25 years old she decided she was tired of her face plastered everywhere in high rise buildings and billboards and magazines so she decided to move to Springfield, Missouri to live with her parents. She decided to buy a small 1000-watt radio station to have something to do. With radio nobody saw her face. It was the reason she decided to get a degree in radio broadcasting in college. Her American born professional baseball player fiancé did not want Fe leaving Manhattan; she had to get away from her modeling career. She needed a change. In Springfield she met a born-again heavy metal rock star from the Philippines wanting his music played on the radio. It was not love at first sight more like he looks like some rice farmer with long hair trying to resemble Jesus and yelling made-up lyrics and playing an electric guitar while claiming it was music.

LEE CHON - The Advocate of the....

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

I needed a 50,000 words novel to enter TEXNOVEL’s writing contest. LEE CHON – The Advocate of the Point Guard is what I came up with.

On his way to Kansas City, Missouri; Lee Chon was asked to help out an old friend. The owner of a new professional basketball franchise in Manila, Philippines needed Lee to solve a murder. Felix Granada turned twenty-one and he decided to celebrate by going to a local bar. He awakened in a hotel room with the police banging on the door. Felix was unable to remember what happened the past several days. The first round draft pick, a six-foot-five point guard, was arrested. Lee and his wife Desiree extended their vacation in their birth country to solve the mystery. Character Notes: Lee Chon – Filipino/Chinese American private detective. Desiree Chon – wife of Lee Chon. Luigi Biscotto – bodyguard, driver, pilot of Lee and Desiree Chon. Felix Granada – first round draft choice of the Abaca Textiles Water Buffalos. Jake Aquila – Owner of Abaca Textiles.

White Spiritu

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

A life and death experience transformed Magayon Dominga into a masked vigilante mentally desperate to rid her little corner in the Philippines of unsolved abductions.

(WINNER in NaNoWriMo’s April Script Frenzy) In the Philippines kidnapping of the innocent was as common as the possible fifty expected typhoons somewhere at the 7,107 islands. The multiple of islands was paradise to those with fortunes, but to many it was constantly living life in fear and in terror on a day to day existence, yet life had to be lived so the unexpected dangerous was tolerated like mosquitoes and coconut beetles, deadlier than the fear itself. After accidentally riding a jeepney filled with kidnapped victims, Magayon survive from a bullet to the back of the head. The blessed event created thoughts of self-sacrifice to help rid the islands of the corruption and the evil. The thoughts did not go away even after the warning of the father. It created a masked vigilante the local people started calling the White Spiritu. With knowledge in hand a woman trained in veterinary medicine decided to catch kidnappers and murderers of the innocent. She never intended to kill the enemy; imprisonment was more humane to men that became animals in thinking no longer having a soul. As the White Spiritu scouring the countryside to find victims required tremendous patience with unexpected menacers.

JOHN PATE - Tears of Sadness

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

John Pate, secret agent, was reactivated to protect the American president; dangers more than ten years after the new millennium were incomprehensible, four chapters completed.

Calvin Woodrow was just elected president. The threats on his life went beyond terrorists or other country’s retribution of past dealings of another president. The wealthiest unknown families lost control of their Communist world because all the countries wanted economic development. Families banded together to form a covert world government above the governments and laws of the only supper power left with the countries developing super economies.
Back after the Cold War the military families spearheaded a campaign to overrun countries that won the war, in the United States it was stopped by the White Tiger named John Pate.
More than a decade later the White Tiger reactivated to fight the same danger of world domination, but malicious families had to start by toppling the only super power left in the world. You could only control the world by controlling the leader of the world, or at least respected as the leader because a world government did not exist.
Calvin Woodrow was abducted. John Pate had 48 hours to find the president before the vice-president could be told. Was world domination the reason for the seizure or was it just survival of another man that money could buy, living longer.

The Invasion of Sampaguita

Daniel Escurel Occeno - Pen Na....

“Winner in NaNoWriMo for November 2010”. Josephine wanted to marry Teodore. It was mutual, but the Japanese armed forces invaded the town of Gubat.

Six days after Pearl Harbor was attacked the town of Gubat was invaded by the Japanese army. The Philippines was at war with Japan and the entire country was occupied by the Japanese army. Most of the inhabitants were able to hide in the jungles of one of the barrios surrounding the township.

The Japanese wanted the rice to send back to Japan to feed a military state trying to rule all of Asia.

The war disrupted the marriage of Teodore and Josephine. Teodore was from landowners of rice and inherited enough land to start his own family. Josephine was from an average family living a simple life. Teodore and Josephine wanted to get married, but Teodore was a Catholic Spaniard and Josephine was a local. The couple’s plans drifted apart even longer as the families hid in the jungles when news of Japanese soldiers on their way to Gubat and the surrounding townships.

Back when I was in high school I looked up novels of James Bond or similar type of action thrillers of secret agents and I found it simplistic or easy to read.
