This Side of Eden

Derrick Hibbard

A terrible accident leaves a man and his 18-month-old daughter stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. A modern, stylized love story.

An unconventionally told love story about a man and his daughter stranded in the Alaskan. As their struggle to survive unfolds, the father tells a love story about his wife, ending with the plane crash that left them stranded.

An excerpt:

When I was younger, I got it into my head to write a poem about freezing to death. I took a cold shower, and then sat in a lawn chair in the back yard, while snow fell around me. I wanted to sleep then as much as I do now, and I only lasted about 2 minutes in the cold backyard. I shivered so hard, my teeth hurt—the ends of my hair hurt, impossibly, I know. And I went inside and took a hot bath. I never wrote the poem, and I don’t think I’ve thought about that attempt at freezing to death since that night—until now. Now, I don’t notice which parts of my body hurt—I’m completely numb. But I do think about my daughter and how much she must hurt right now.

I snuggle her closer to my body, trying to keep her warm.

Monarch

Derrick Hibbard

Classic monster horror. A monster literally feeds on human fear. Ripping the brain from the skull and eating the adrenaline saturated hypothalamus.

Monarch is classic monster horror at its best. A monster, born from the fears that lie deep in the imagination, stalks the inhabitants of a small southern town.

The story opens with a young married couple driving through the forest outside the town. They see a shadow just beyond the tree line, startling them. Not 30 seconds later, a large rock crashes through their windshield; the truck rolls and pins the husband. The wife escapes the wreckage and goes for help, only to be hunted by the monster. In the town, several people are seeing strange things. A small storeowner sees pale, cat-like creatures crawling on his roof. The towns pastor sees a dark shadow just outside his chapel. The town's sheriff hears eerie giggling on his radio, followed by sobs and screams. As people succumb to their fears and are killed by the monster, several townspeople rally together to fight back against the monster.

Monarch is a throwback to scary stories told around campfires, to shadows that terrify us in the night, and to human goodness in the face of pure evil.

Excellent writing! You have taken us inside the tortured mind of the narrator, and what's more profound is that you've made it easier for the reader to relate! I love the dark ambiguity, the arbitrariness of it all. Very very good. SHELVED. From your profile pic, I think you'll like my story.... view book

Wow--this is amazing. Not just your writing, but the plot are enough to grab the reader! SHELVED. (Reminds me of the movie, City of God--from Brazil.) view book

Very emotional and provoking. I feel like the story carries you right along--especially with the first chapter. I would maybe consider deleting chapter two and adding those details along the way--as it is more a description (or an aside) rather than a vehicle to move the plot (and the reader) alon... view book

This starts with a bang--and is very gripping through the first few chapters. Even the first paragraph, where you start with the description of an envelop--your writing style shines through. The dialogue throughout is very believable and seems consistent with the time period. Well done. SHELVED--... view book
