about me

Thanks for coming by. I write both historical fiction and non-fiction and memoir essays. TREE SOLDIER, which got such support here, is out as a book and on Kindle. It was just named as a finalist for 2012 EPIC award in historical fiction. It can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Tree-Soldier-J-L-Oakley/dp/1453896473/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 So happy that book clubs and libraries are picking it up.

THE JOSSING AFFAIR, my novel of Norway during WW II, has special place in my heart . It was a finalist at the Pacific NW Writers in 2005. I'm actively searching representation for it.

The Jossing Affair

J.L Oakley

A man left in the snow for dead, betrayed by innocent love. Norwegian fishermen, agents. In wartime, love and trust are not always compatible.

British-trained Norwegian intelligence agent Tore Haugland has enough worries when he is sent to a tiny fishing hamlet on the west coast of Norway to set up a line to receive arms and agents from England via the “Shetland Bus.” Posing as a deaf fisherman, his mission is complicated when he falls in love with Anna Fromme, the German widow of an old family friend. Accused of betraying her husband, she has a small daughter and secrets of her own. Though the Allies have liberated France and the Netherlands, the most zealous of the Nazis hang on in Norway, sending out agents of their own to disembowel local resistance groups. If Haugland fails it could not only cost him his life, but those of the fishermen who have joined him. When Haugland is betrayed and left for dead, he will not only have to find the one who betrayed him and destroyed his network, but also prove that the one he loved was not the informer.

I thought this was a fun read, an innocent on a journey he has no idea where it's going or why he's actually there. I took the chapters I read as tongue-in-cheek with an over the top premise. Loved some of your descriptions such as "looked like a fullback forced to wear nice suit for a fancy party" ... view book

This was an enjoyable read, a bit creepy at times. The opening caught my attention though in the beginning there seems to be different points of view with the hawk, Janice etc, but the pieces come together quickly. The descriptions of the neighborhoods are eerie, giving the reader a sense of dread.... view book

Very nicely done. It gets off to a creepy start,(a good thing) but the chapters that follow have good pacing which shows that you don't drop off after a dramatic beginning. I get the sense of who Grogan is through his actions and thoughts. The section on his wife with wedding veil, then going throug... view book

This novel an appealing voice and an eye for detail with its lovely choice of words. Or is it eye for detail with tongue in cheek? Small town life. The feuding sisters looking for church converts. Laundry on the line. A great richness. Underneath all the tone, though, there is a feeling of danger a... view book

Nobody's Knight is a fun read. Your scenes are well written in a voice that captures the MC's attitude about life. Your description of the first dragon we see and Morgan fights is very good. The youngster has all the foils of a adolescent. Loved the imagery of the moors where "the clouds dragged the... view book
