about me

I return reads and I am not tetchy about being reminded, but please, if you want to swap - you first!

I'm a UK surgeon working in Middlesbrough
(The Great North East).

When I'm not cutting I am writing, jogging or trekking, sometimes cooking.

My first published novel - a WW2 thriller called: 'THE CYCLIST' is now available from Amazon, from Fingerpress (publisher's site), Waterstones locally and online, Book depository, WHSmith online etc. Reached number one in Amazon's best-seller list in the 'War section' briefly!

The Cyclist has sold more than 5000 copies (if you include Kindle sales).

The publisher has also agreed to publish the second book, which will reach book shops by Summer this year and the third, 'Francesca Pascal' will be out later. All of them have been on here and owe whatever sparkle they have to the tremendous support of Authonomites past and present! Thank you guys/gals!

I have two Roman historical trilogies, the first part of one (Barbarian I) will come out as an eBook on Kindle later this year through Fingerpress. It was displayed here, reaching 27 at one time. That first book reached number 7 in the Yeovil Literary prize [2011] and was highly commended. It has also been professionally edited.
I don't like a lot of purple prose descriptions - mainly narrative prose, action and dialogue.

I'm married to a wonderful woman who is a psychologist. I have three sons (all doctors) and a 14-year-old daughter who became a published poet long before I ever got published! (Grrrrr)

I am a full time UK Brian surgeon (I only operate on people called Brian).

Why am I on this site?
Just interested in anyone's feedback, and happy to comment on other's work, if they find it helpful.

The purpose of a book is to entertain, so If you enjoy the one that's up, let me know.

Maybe my stuff is worth a read?

Go on, try it!

The Fat Chef - A French War Dr....

Fredrik Nath

1940: Raoul, the Executive Head Chef of 'Le Meurice', fights back in occupied Paris, the only way he knows how.

1940, Paris falls to the occupying Germans. Raoul, fat Executive Head Chef of Le Meurice, the top hotel of Paris, is nonchalant. He is content to wait for Pétain to make peace and for everything to return to normal. He wants to get on with life and admire his demi-sous-chef, Natalie with unrequited love.
When the Germans begin to cut out the Jewish staff and finally threaten Natalie, he realises he can no longer ignore what is happening.
Hauptsturmführer Schiller, the SD officer who has taken over the hotel, insists upon more German food, and Raoul acquiesces as he hides Jewish members of staff in any nook or cranny he can find in the hotel. In the end, even the wine cellar is occupied by refugees.
On the night of a big German military banquet, Schiller discovers Natalie in the kitchen. When Rolf kills him defending his woman, he has to dispose of the body.
He discovers there is more in a chef’s inventory than Béchamel sauce.

This is very good fluent writing though it's hard to comment on the story as it is outside my genre. The Mc comes through strong and you have a flair for dialogue. My only negative comment would be to suggest you cut down on the adverbs and adjectives as I think the writing would be stronger witho... view book

No real comment to make. Breathtakingly powerful writing, excellent pace and truly professional. Set in an unusual place and time, this book should be between covers in no time. Tight as a crab's arse at six fathoms, the writing draws you into the story. In short - stunning! Ken Follet eat yer ... view book

Hi Leon, Take all this with a barrel of salt from an amateur writer who doesn’t know, but just gives opinion. Don’t change anything on my say so. Consider what you want. An engaging story with a strong central main character and a flair of imaginative story telling. The short pitch is good and re... view book

Well, I think the story is excellent, the pitch is a good seller. The opening seems a bit flat for the drama. I think the dialogue could be adjusted to make it more realistic. If you're dying, time is short. She's coughing up copious amounts of blood - could they really hear what she's saying - is ... view book

I'm not sure how I commented las time I read this, but... It strikes me as an excellent topic for a book. Your writing is competent but you could raise it to a higher level by enriching the descriptive prose in the first part of chapter one. The sights and sounds, the smells of Kathmandu need to p... view book
