about me

I was working as a freelance journo for a number of years, mainly writing for the travel industry. Now I'm writing books. Have had two children's books published, the third and fourth are finished (well, except for final editing). It's a series for 9-12 yr olds. I'm also editing my first adult historical novel which I completed last month.
I'm a retired teacher, have a great family including five funtastic grandchildren. My husband loves to fish so we travel a lot, and I write while he flicks lures. We both play golf.

Lift Up Your Voice

Dell Brand

Two young women are determined to escape the confines of the Victorian Age and have a lasting impact on the fledgling town of Melbourne.

Florence is seduced by the son of her employer in Leicestershire. Fleeing her life there, her twins are born illegitimately in Bedford in 1819. Alone and destitute, the twins’ paternal grandfather saves her from the workhouse. Thanks to his benevolence, Joey and Maddy grow up in secluded gentility.
At nineteen, the twins lose both their mother and their beloved grandfather. After time in London and on the advice of their solicitor, they flee the country, choosing Australia as their new home. The voyage is not without incident and Joey finds she cannot remain in Sydney. She travels on to Melbourne, determined to make her life in the fledgling settlement. Maddy joins her there.
In this town where floods and constant mud threaten to overwhelm, the girls follow their plan for their future. Despite the plight of the aborigines, an economic depression, labour shortages and personal trauma, they ultimately win through.
The book follows the lives of these women as they struggle to earn their place in a man’s world. The saga of early Melbourne unfolds through the tragedies and celebrations of two women destined to change the fabric of colonial society and make a lasting impact on Australian life.

History's Still a Mystery

Dell Brand

The third chapter book in the series for 9-12 year olds that teaches world history through exciting time travel adventures.

The third book in the series for 9-12 year olds, teaching world history through exciting time travel adventures.

Matt, Ben, Nicky and Kris live in Coolongawong, a small town in New South Wales, Australia. They have spent the last two years with the school's most popular teacher, Mr Mac, in his magic classroom. They discovered early on that by saying some magic words and tripping on a creaky floorboard, they could be transported back in time to experience first-hand, exciting, historic and sometimes dangerous events.

Now they are about to start Year Seven at high school and must leave the magic classroom behind.

But Mr Mac has suggested a possible solution to this and, if it works out, it’s one that will lead to many more exciting escapades. But things don’t go to plan and Matt has to introduce his younger sister, Olivia, to the magic.

The children visit the Great Wall of China, spend time with the Incas, watch a cobra and mongoose fight near the Taj Mahal, join Drake, meet pirates, experience the Crimean War, live in a ghetto in World War II, narrowly escape death on board the Hindenburg, and have many more adventures into the past.

History's a Mystery Once More

Dell Brand

The fourth book. Will, Jack, Livvy and Grace are now in Year 6 and have another exciting year ahead in Mr Mac's magic classroom.

The four friends Will, Jack, Livvy and Grace are now in Year 6 and have another exciting year ahead in Mr Mac's magic classroom. They discovered last year that by tripping on a creaky floorboard, crashing into the teacher's desk and saying the magic words 'History's a Mystery', they can be transported back in time and experience history as it is actually happening in exciting and sometimes dangerous adventures. They are actual participants in their adventures, not merely spectators. This book includes visits back to Cleopatra, Mozart and Boudicca, an old circus, a flight on a Lancaster bomber during World War II and a night spent in Darwin when Cyclone Tracy struck, and many more adventures in between. They go back in history eighteen times in this book.
The four friends are keen on playing practical jokes and Mr Mac is too. They also experience some of the difficulties and frustrations that 12 year olds inevitably go through. Grace is faced with the imminent separation of her parents and Will must choose between conflicting interests as his year becomes increasingly busy.

Fran Loved this chapter too. The reader is really building an empathy with the narrator. I'd change your last line to read 'I stood only two feet away when his surgeon tried to locate the bullet.' Leave the reader in suspense. Otherwise, it's an awesome start. Dell Brand 'Lift Up Your Voice' view book
