Cupid

Lee Eure

A woman discovers that monsters are as real as love. Two sides of the same coin, in fact. Now she has to pick one.

Cathleen O’Malley is a train wreck that keeps on wrecking. Cat’s whip-smart, dangerous, and distant as a star. To save her life, she made a deal with a cunning djinn whose presence warps reality. All she had to do was not fall in love and keep the oblivious David Bright from doing the same. But Cat might have failed, and she definitely vanished.
David, clueless without Cat, considers searching until he finds love again as quick as blinking, right across the hall. He forgets to question the business cards he’s been getting daily, ‘Cupid’ printed neatly across the center.
See, Cupid is real. His aim is always true. This is human bedrock, unmistakable and unshakable. But the cherub just missed and all the rules are changing.
Imprisoned in a shifting dimension of sexpot arrows, thieving shadows, and rats made of human memory-meat, Cat is changing. She must learn the rules of true magic, the laws that govern monsters and bend worlds. If she survives, David can make a choice that may threaten the crack shot cherub himself.

Cupid injects love, fear, and magic into a three-part mystery. The first ten chapters of parts one and two are uploaded.

What I appreciate most is taking the time to build the world and the environment. It's rare that this sort of thriller goes to such lengths to layer in so many elements rather than just trusting to rapid plot movements. In some ways it reads more like fantasy than a spy novel - and I mean that as a ... view book

The opening sequence on the train successfully makes the reader wonder about Jacob's history and sets the tone and the world solidly. And honestly, I feel like it's a rare thing to read gothic work that attempts to bring the style back to Dickens, Poe, or Lovecraft at its most sinister. It's an old ... view book

Bold choices abound, Barry. The work reminds of 'A Clockwork Orange' in its audacity and the singular voice of the narrator. It is also similarly intimidating and rewarding for the same reasons. It's a rare thing to find something with a truly original sound as a vehicle for such a dense story. And... view book

I love ambitious writing, and this fits the bill. Zsa Zsa is as fierce as she is smart - you'd be hard pressed to find a more compelling woman to be at the center of the storm. There's a breakneck pace to the work, a lot of attention paid to sensations and thoughts - it all serves to bring us into ... view book
