The Secret Race: Anglo-Indians by Warren Brown

A special collection of writings on the History, Heritage and Culture of the Anglo-Indian community

Anglo-Indians are the only English speaking, Christian community in India, whose Mother tongue is English and who have a Western lifestyle in the sub-continent of India. Anglo-Indians originated during the Colonial period in India. When British soldiers and traders had affairs or married Indian women their offspring came to be known as Anglo-Indians or Eurasians in history.

Hello Warren. I was glad to find your book was about this subject matter. My favourite books are about, or set in India and the information you've given the readers about the AngloIndians is fascinating. I read all 12 chapters that you have uploaded. I felt like it was a smooth read with many interesting vignettes about the people that comprise this culture. It was like taking a walk through time and being given a personal tour of the landmarks ...

Hi Warren, this is right up my street in terms of subject matter! I like this kind of cultural history writing. One question - is this a straightforward documentary type book or will it be more of a personal memoir as well? If it's the former there is a little too much 'tone' from the narrator e.g. third para of intro "This is partly due to the fact of the racial prejudices in Western society today." Also, in chapter two ...

    Warren,
The Secret Race is very enlightening. My first character (a woebegon mystery) was Anglo-Indian, though I could have benefited from more research. I had developed this MC after watching Madame Sousatzka--a general but powerful influence. Anyway, to your writing. Very elegant and crisp. Bravo. Thank you for uploading your works here. Love the screen name. Starred highly.
    Cheers!

Hi Warren, Looking towards the future where it would seem that the DNA branches of the Anglo-Indians could be discovered was stimulating. I know little about that group of people and the family descriptions along with their placement in India absorbed me. The personal tone alternating with the information is a nice format. When you point out all the different combinations of race and the diverse titles associated with them in one sub-continent it makes me realise how ridiculous it all is worldwide. This is a fascinating insight and I will be back to read more. Paula Barrett (Cuthbert-how mean is my valley)
